Well, I did it. I sent the deposit to KMG Safaris for a hunt in 2019. We booked one of Marius' 10 day 2x1 specials for plains game, as well as a day of offshore fishing and a Big 5 Game Drive. We are then going to do the Garden Route tour from Port Elizabeth to Capetown, with a few days in Capetown to finish off. On the way back, we will spend two or three days in Germany, too. I am now involved in dotting all the i's, and crossing all the t's in order to make sure nothing gets missed. It's real now!!! It seems like a long ways off, but I know it will come faster than we think. We are both going to shoot 30-06's, with Barnes TTSX bullets. I want to take a spare rifle....either my Ruger No.1S in 338 Win Mag, or a new build on a Rem 700 in 338-06.....decisions, decisions. In any case, I need a firearms case that will hold three rifles. I have a couple of ideas, but I am always willing to listen to what other hunters might suggest.

You have a lot of dots to connect there. I am anxious to see how the planning goes. Congratulations and good luck!

Congrats! I'm looking at 2019 or 2020 for my first.

Congrats! I'm sure you are excited!

A first safari is a great experience - and the planning and anticipation are a big part of it - enjoy

Only because you asked for suggestions - I wouldn't be bothered taking an extra rifle, the odds of having to use it are slim, and the hassles of getting it there just wouldn't be worth it for me - especially considering that you plan on hunting 2X1 - in case of extreme rifle problems you can still share and have a very successful hunt. I would check with KMG / Marius, chances are he would have a loaner if you ran into major rifle problems

1: Do not take an "extra" rifle. Really no need.
2: Spending a few days in Germany AND traveling with rifles? Start researching that NOW and try to get the permits. I think that may prove to be a formidable task - though I've never done it. Get with your travel agent and start the paperwork process and keep up with any changes to the law - I'd hate to be returning and spending a few days in a country and have them confiscate my gun(s) and then try to get the firearms returned.
3: 2 rifles in the same caliber will require two different "ownerships"; thus you can not temporarily import two guns of the same caliber.

Congrats on the booking!

Congrats, y'all will have a blast!

While I agree with the others that a 3rd rifle might be excessive, I completely understand taking 2. And you can bring in 2 rifles of the same caliber in just your name, you'll just have to fill out/sign one more document that riflepermits.com will be happy to send you.

I've attached a link to a great case made by Americase, I've got the 2 gun model and it'll last the rest of my life I'm sure.

Good morning. I have looked into this exact thing. German Customs has no issue holding your firearms for you while you travel (the last time I checked, anyway). I visit this on a regular basis.

Congrats on your booking your safari.

Interesting how many have already said: Don't over pack.

Congrats on booking! Definitely sounds like that is going to be one heck of a trip!

Congratulations! You will have a great time.... regarding rifles:

30-06 +
a new build on a Rem 700 in 338-06.....

:D

Seriously, buildng and working up loads for the new rifle just adds to the anticipation

I liked my Tuffpak very much.

I used 30-06 on both of my trips over..... 168gr Barnes TTSX. It was good on all 15 on my PG.... from Springbok to Eland. Good luck. Nothing but great things heard about Marius & KMG.

So, just to clarify things, my girlfriend is going with me. She will be shooting a rifle that fits her, not me, thus my original intent to take a spare rifle. I will likely only pack the two, and rely on a loaner if necessary.

Congrats on booking your first hunt with Marius and KMG!

This was hanging up in the lodge when we finished our lioness hunt just over a week ago with Marius and KMG, thought it was appropriate:)

Agree with the rest, dont take a spare rifle. Worse case you borrow the outfitters rifle, I'm sure he will have 2 or 3 to choose from.

One of my favorite quotes! Saw it on a hunting show a year or so ago..

@LiegeRiver, pay attention to greyfox! You have lots to learn about traveling to Africa and transiting countries with guns.

LiegeRiver, I have hunted with Marius five times (always borrowed a rifle), they have quality loaner rifles should something go wrong.

Thanks, Adgunner. Are you a bird gunner? Spent 24 1/2 years in the PPCLI myself. Did you take your own guns, and what permits did you have to get? Thanks.
