Perhaps the "Cold drink" quota just dropped!

Police Minister Fikile Mbalula has unveiled plans to radically transform the safety and security at O.R. Tambo International Airport and ensure South Africa’s busiest airport is safe for visitors.

This comes after the Police Minister visited the airport last week and convened the South African Police Service (SAPS), the department of State Security, the department of Home Affairs, the Airports Company South Africa and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department to come up with a comprehensive plan for the airport.

Yesterday Mbalula announced: “We’ve suspended 7 Police Officers at the Airport, and redeployed others with new additions.

“Over 40 ACSA employees have been suspended for alleged corruption; we’ve reshuffled SAPS officers who have been at the airport for a long time.”

He said the reshuffling had happened because “we need an effective working personnel at SAPS” and said “we’ve elevated the status of SAPS management at the airport to Major General, which means, more resources will be out in.

They needed check those guys out.

Reports and feedback on how you experience travelling through the airport, would be appreciated.
Let us know...

Yea they should get a barage of complaints about them custom forms

Everybody must get hit up for cool drink

Hopefully they shuffled the firearms office and not just the guys in the back.

If there was something going on there, I never saw it. JNB may not be the most efficient airport int he world, but it's far from the worst, and the problems it does have - like biometrics - are created by the government, not by those who work there.

As for the SAPS Firearms Office, the usual request, from time to time, for something special, but if you said ignored the hints, or just said no, they still did the job. I can only hope that the newbies won't want their turn. . . . Better the people you know that the ones you don't.

Just came through there 3 weeks ago. I thought everything went quick and without incident. It may have helped that I was met by Riflepermits.com. But I had no issues.

Yea kind of like congress. If you elected all new ones they would have to steal. They ones we got aready stole enough

I give that a few weeks before the "cool drink" request restarts. Or the American translation where's my tip (bribe) to make sure your gun gets on the plane for your flight.

I wonder if this just made getting rifles through the airport easier, or harder?

Well that's the question on my mind! Five trips through OR Tambo and no real problems getting guns at the SAPS OFFICE. They were very efficient this year and even seemed to move a little faster than I had experienced in past years. Going home the Delta guy who takes your guns back to that little room outside passport control. Now that's the crook. They always want you to know that they "WILL MAKE SURE YOUR GUNS GET ON THE PLAN SIR" while smiling and holding out their hand.

Why no mention about this in the tipping guide??? What is the customary "Gift" for these underpaid overwork brothers in Law Enforcement?

I had 3 ACSA officials arrested on July 10 that conned my clients out of $120 telling them they need to be escorted to tge gun counter..... they merely walked them the regular exit and disappeared. Hunters need to know that there is no fees payable for anything at the Airport except parking and if you had a pre arranged permit. Please be aware and if approached for any money get details of persons and report to your Outfitter. There is a BIG drive to get ridd of these criminals..

The delta guy got me for 10 dollars. Said 5 wasn't enough. For piece of mind I gave it to him.

Guess I'm too naive to know what that guy is really asking for. My two trips (2009, 2013) I just shook the guy's hand, said thank you very much and went on my way. Rifles made it home just fine. Pretty sure it was the same guy both times, but might have gotten a new one since then. Guess I'll find out next month.

Four trips through Joburg using Gracy Travel meet and greet and never tipped a nickel other than the meet and greet guys. And yeah, that little back room checking out seemed a little shaky but I was told DO NOT pass money to anyone there.

My experience was smooth as silk in 2013. I paid for the meet and greet. Maybe that meant that I paid an experienced person to guide me or maybe it meant the proper tips were applied to the proper people to ensure the process was easy. Either way, it was worth it to me.

While I am not advocating bribery and/or extortion, I will admit that given the choice between 1) straightforward idiocy and/or ignorance where the check in girl at the US airport does not know how to check in a rifle, does not want to check in a rifle, does not know if in fact one can check in a rifle, will and/or can not read the information from the airlines own website that I printed out in case of such situation, and takes forever to find a manager who can sort it out or 2) some good honest corruption where a modest tip sorts out all the problems and gets my gear where it is supposed to be safely without wasting my time I choose the latter.

My one and only trip stopping in Tambo went smoothly. All other trips I stayed in transit. Did have 2 "officers" offer to help me with my gun case, I told them thanks but I would not be tipping them. They disappeared quickly.

Or maybe those seven just didn't give the proper kickback to the officials higher up than them, so they were replaced with a "cousin" who understands the rules...........
