Dangerous Game hunt course at the Africa Wildlife College -Practice round Part 1:Buffalo

Here is a video, showing the downside using a hat that will take your eyes from the target....:D:D:D

Here you will see when the .458 Mannlicher Schoenaur is shot with a heavier load while the shooter did not know it..:D

I will ask the professionals who conduct the course to show us how to shoot the .458 Mannlicher Schoenauer as well...I will take along shelf bought ammo as well to have more shooting fun...will upload as many videos as possible of the actual shooting..I was thinking about taking a GO Pro camera with...(y)

Good, the GO-Pro camera is packed in..every available camera will go with ...I really am looking forward to this course...(y) I think the highlight of this course will be sitting around a bush-veld fire while listening to highly experienced Game rangers about their experiences in the bush...(y)

Fast is good but accurate is better.

A great many of us are envious of your ability to attend these courses Gert. Look forward to any video you upload.

Would love to attend and take my son and daughter on this course!

Agreed, it would be good for them!

@Gert Odendaal how often is this course held and where can you find more info on it?
Is it open to non RSA residents?

Good day to all the members:
Here follows a thread regarding a Dangerous Game hunt course with specific the buffalo in mind .Here is a description of what the course entails from Dr. Kevin Robinson , author of the Perfect Shot book/video.

Hi Gentlemen, Kevin here.

Myself, Gawie Lindeque and Pieter Nel are looking forward to having you join us.

When plan to make this a memorable, rewarding and exciting experience for you.

We will be spending a lot of time out in the veld – I mention this incident to help you prepare mentally.

This will be the real deal gentlemen!

OK HERE IS WHAT TO EXPECT:

We will set up a camp for you on our shooting range.

The shooting range is unfenced – and so you will be sleeping out in the greater KNP!

There will be 3 x double tents, each with two sturdy stretchers and matrasses.

There will be a large military type tent for shades and to act as a dining room,

and a kitchen tent with lock-up space for your food. The baboons are also hungry – do not leave out anything to tempt them.

There will be a watercart, there is a toilet and we will also set up a shower for you.

We will supply all the cutlery you will need, pots pans, knives, forks, cups, braai grids etc

but please realize that it is a self-catering weekend. We will also supply a few solar lanterns but if you want better lighting,

please bring your own 12 V or diode strip lights. We will supply camp chairs and tables and some firewood to get you started

but you all need to bring wood as well. We do not supply / offer any form of refrigeration so please bring your own or ice boxes.

The shop at Orpen Gate is about 12 km away where you can purchase additional ice, wood, and basic necessities.

The toilet is close by but it will be necessary for you all to bring a good torch for midnight trips to the loo –

this is lion, leopard and hyena country remember.

Your firearms will have to be secured in the college’s gunsafe until used, but one of our trainers, either Gawie or Piet

will also sleep at the shooting range. He will be armed with a .458 should any problems arrive.

Please try to arrive mid-afternoon’ish on day of the course so you can get unpacked and settled in time for a sunset game drive.

We will kick off the next morning with all the classroom stuff – I will be presenting lectures on buffalo

ecology and the hunting thereof. Shot placement, calibres/cartridges/bullets, trophy assessment etc will all be covered in detail.

If we start early enough I can have this all done by lunchtime. If so we will spend the afternoon in the veld.

With buffalo and some elephants around we hope to be able to get you all to each do some approaches in both species.

The next morning will be spent on the shooting range where we will see how you handle your large bore rifles.

This will be basic shooting technique, shooting off sticks, sitting and ‘uit die vuys’ and 25 to 50 m.

This is essentially to test the function and reliability of your rifle and to evaluate your big bore rifle shooting performance.

We have yet to find a course attendee’s whose rifle that did not have a problem so please do not be offended

if we are honest and critical about the rifle you bring.

If it has a problem or some fault, we will find it – hopefully it won’t.

Absolute minimum calibre 9,2 x 62 mm – hope you’ll all bring something larger.

Please also bring your ammo belt, binoculars etc because we will want to see how you carry all this stuff while out in the veld.

You need to be dressed as if you are actually hunting so we can see ‘if it all works’

We take such things seriously because our lives depend on them! (the buffalo stopping incident mentioned above is a prime

example of this) We will be in the veld doing approaches, tracking etc. in the afternoon.

On the last day of the course we will shoot our life-like courses – buffalo.

There are 6 targets in total and some will be shot a couple of times so I suggest you bring at least 2 boxes of ammo for your rifle.

If you are serious about this, bring the ammo you would actually hunt with, not cheap practice stuff.

The shots are very life-like with the shooting distances varying from about 15 to 60 m.

Shots will be taken from all the ‘usual’ veld positions

Remember this is a big bore dangerous game course so no large high-power scopes.

It is likely to be hot so please bring good hats and sunscreen.

And good walking shoes/boots because we will be walking in the veld.

And neutral clothing.

Please also bring the completed college registration form AND a copy of your ID. See attachment

This is so that we can register you with the SAWC – a necessity for the issuing of an attendance certificate.

If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact me – my contact details are below.

Remember you’re doing this to learn and have fun! So lets make it happen!

Kevin

We are a group of six participants, I got the participants together for a training session today, focusing on cycling the rounds( dummies ) through the action as fast as possible. Today we did the cycling procedures as well as sighting in the rifles with scopes. I shot my 404 Jeffery today , open sights at sixty meters.
Step 1 :
Sighting in the scoped rifles all were .375 H&H Magnum rifles at sixty meters: All rifles were sighted in..my open sights 404 Jeffery was on the spot as usual...this rifle shoots much, much more accurate as what I am able to shoot.

Excellent course. Great to read about and thanks for sharing.

Members, thank you kindly for the positive response. I should mention that the course we are participating in is focusing only on the Buffalo. Dr. Kevin Robinson conduct a complete course including both Dangerous Game species, the Elephant and Buffalo over a period of four days. This complete course cost R4000 ( South African rand) $304 (US Dollar) . It includes a practical secession everyday where you walk and stalk an Elephant as near as possible to place a laser beam fitted onto a rifle at the shot placement on the elephant and as well as on the buffalo.
It includes theory, practical shooting at strategic placed lifelike forms of the elephant /Buffalo .
Similar courses are going to be conducted in the future including the Lion as well.

What advantage gives it me as participant?
I do receive a certificate ( if I pass the course) to apply for a Master hunter status that will enable me to apply for for hunting rifle licenses /ammo ect in the future.

Since I am not a PH/hunter with strong financial ties/owner of a game range , this will give me an opportunity to get a near as possible scenario to hunt a buffalo..
I will ask Dr. Kevin Robinson to log into our forum and answer questions members want to put to him. I am sure Gerome will not mind?

We will be driving to the Kruger National Park coming Monday!! I still need to do some re-loading before that time...(y)(y) As mentioned , I will try and take a lot of photos and upload some videos as well..my real hope is that we get a buffalo that does not like all the attention the participants are giving him and gives as a charge..:LOL::LOL:(y)

Von Gruff, yes, we are extremely fortunate to have had a Kruger Park game ranger by the name of Cleve Cheney who is the founder/originator of the African Wildlife College many years ago. Cleve Cheney participated in the 1882 Era Black powder hunt this year and I talked to him about the Wildlife College . When he left the KNP to retire , he handed the African Wildlife College over to another extremely competent person who will ensure it`s future, Dr. Kevin Robinson, a legend in his own right.

IwV, as long as your children are 18 years of age they can participate and they need to have a Dedicated Hunters status.

PeterG: I will come back to you regarding your question: Is it open to hunters abroad/participants from other countries?
I will ask for a calendar that indicates the course dates as well.(y)(y)(y)

Excellent course. Great to read about and thanks for sharing.

Dr. Ray, it is a pleasure, thank you for taking the time to follow this thread, it is much appreciated...(y)(y)(y)(y)

This is a fun thread to read, thanks for posting it. I read Dr. Robertson's book "Africa's Most Dangerous" and found it fascinating, though buffalo are likely a distant dream for me. I imagine his classes are very informative and enjoyable.

Only 304 USD for the full course?? Where do I sign up for this? Is it a course open to foreign hunters?

Sound like an AH get together to anyone else??

I will ask Dr. Kevin Robinson regarding participation of hunters abroad when arriving at the camp. I will give feedback to all that is interesting in participating in such a course... We had feedback from participants on a previous course ..they all are extremely impressed..even PH `s who participated in the course mentioned that they learned a lot ...They specifically mentioned the high level of professionalism of Dr. Kevin Robinson and assistants during this course.(y)(y)(y)(y)

Adam, you are quite correct, as pointed out Dr. Kevin Robinson is a specialist when it comes to hunt buffalo..he has many, many years of experiences regarding every type of subject on a buffalo....he came from a bygone era in Rhodesia that included legends like Richard Harland, Ron Thompson, Paul Groblaar ect..I view Dr Kevin Robinson as one of the greats/legends as well...(y) I spoke to a hunting friend last night..he mentioned that buffalo cows goes for R15000 now in the Low-veld of Mpumalanga.

I definitely consider such an option, especially if I can process all the venison/meat myself....(y)(y)(y)

Good Day Uncle Gert,

Firstly, I hope you have lots of fun on your course, I hope to attend one myself as well.

The course seems to be only accessible to SA Hunters Association Members, of which I am not one, but will figure out something.
Buffalo in the Lowveld are mainly behind the foot and mouth disease control line, thus the meat may not leave the farm unless break dry.
Unfortunately the prices of buffalo cows are rising very steadily, and if you can get one for that price, GO!!!
The are very close to double to what you mentioned.

Wow! This looks like a fabulous course. I second a previous poster about non-SA residents/PHs being able to take the course.

Also, would there happen to be an option for archers? Or is this just not possible?

Hallo Deon, good to hear form you again, I read the article in Magnum about the 404 Jeffery hunt..it really was a great article to read...(y)(y) Deon, the person who told me about the R15000 for a buffalo cow has just returned from a buffalo bull hunt for R30000 a buffalo bull...he shot a beautiful buffalo bull , a friend joined him and shot his buffalo bull as well..two great bulls and a adrenaline rush hunt...I am set on next year to hunt a buffalo cow or if I can get a good price from the game range I will go for a Buffalo bull using my 404 Jeffery....(y)(y):D:D

The reason why it is only for SA Hunters members is because Nico Roets and management brought this course about by their own initiative , it really was great of them to have a vision, thus enable the normal SA Hunter member to engage into such a venture. Nico Roets /management of SA Hunters are great people and really do a lot for us, the foot soldier hunters of SA Hunters organisation. This is all with the attention to get the every day hunter to improve their hunting skills, become better hunters and ensure hunting in South Africa to excel ....When completing this course and pass the requirements you get a certificate , this will enable you to apply for another level /status like the Master hunter status ( still in the pipeline) although you have to complete a Elephant/buffalo and Lion hunting course if I am not mistaken..I will attend the Elephant course next year....and when the Lion hunt course get on route ..I will be jumping in as well...(y):D(y)

As mentioned previously to members abroad , I will ask Dr. Kevin Robinson if they will design a course for members on this forum /hunters abroad. I will get back to all members in this regards...(y)(y)(y) I really think that prospective members who wants to hunt buffalo/elephant in Africa can abide by such a course..especially if it will be the first hunt they want to do in Africa...(y)

@ Oom Gert,

If you get the opportunity at those prices, GO FOR IT!!!!!!

Enjoy your course.
