Wow My Cooper 52 in 416 Rem Mag is falling apart

I have an AHR custom 375, a pre 64 custom supergrade 416 and a custom pre 64 338 ready to go if you need one. Also have 2 cooper 375's but the way your's held up I wouldn't try those. While some people think you can grab any CZ, Model 70 or Ruger off the shelf and take it to Africa, I would have to disagree. Good for you on putting the Cooper through the paces and seeing what it is made of, apparently its put to together with JB weld.

Ok guys UPDATE. Just got the gun back Friday from Cooper. I sent it over night Friday, they sent it back the following Friday they paid for everything.

Now as it stands I spoke directly with the smith that worked on this rifle. He apologized again over and over. He assured me that the only way the sites or handle comes off this rifle is if Superman himself cuts them off with his heat vision.

Not only that but he built and sent a 2nd bolt and Cooper is going to do some things for me in the future for the annoyance of all this. After checking the trigger system ect ect they put 20 rounds of the same ammo I'm using. They said absolutely no problem. Scope is still one inch high at 100 yards. I haven't shot the gun yet myself but I will be taking out this week as we fly out for S Africa on 5-23.

Am I a little nervous? Hell yes I am. Someone mentioned above I should be shooting 1 year before Safari, I agree. But since I'm a fan and customer of Cooper they got backed up on orders. I was suppose to get the gun in January. Got it first of February. I ordered this gun a year and a half ago. Bearbasin also screwed me up with the delay of ordering the scope. They told me they had a scope in stock took my cc order then oooopppsss sorry they are out of stock until March. I ordered the scope Nov 2016.

I'll be back on here Sunday after I run about 25 rounds through it this week.

Thanks for everyone's advice.

I think you can be less concerned than the rest of us who haven't had a factory go over of our firearm prior to going on a DG hunt. I am pretty sure your gun has received more scrutiny and fine detail attention than any other Cooper rifle. Any manufacturer of any product can have a failure. My best and worst trucks were made by GM.

Fingers crossed for you.

Good luck!

And things like this just make dangerous game hunting more exciting.

Have a great hunt!

Glad they took care of the issue

Coopers are specialty rifles, they are considered an investment and are supposed to be in line with custom quality rifles, in short, you expect the very best because of the premium you pay for them. I have a 22-250 cooper and have been fortunate; the accuracy, fit and finish are all top tier. I would be on the phone demanding a replacement rifle. There unfortunately isn't sufficient time for them to turn things around and provide you with a new rifle before you leave. I would ask the PH what he had in terms of a rental rifle. It's unfortunate that after spending the money you have to have this rifle for this specific trip, you are now left scrambling for other options. Considering its purpose, a rifle for dangerous game, I would not accept repair as an option. The rifle has already proven itself defective.

Obi-
Glad you got your rifle back. I would put pretty good money on the fact that the smith went over it with a fine tooth comb and it is good to go. Good luck on your hunt and have a great time.

Best of luck with the rifle!

I'm glad to hear that Cooper stepped up to the plate and took care of business. Time is so short that you are probably going to have to take enough ammo with you to Africa to get some range time in before you go hunting. There is still that "confidence thing" that you shouldn't have to worry about. I hope you have a great uneventful hunt. Looking forward to the story and pictures when you get back.

I would never be able to trust that rifle again, especially with DG.
I would send it back for a refund and buy something else

I believe pretty much everything that could go wrong with your rifle already has, so you should feel confident that it is good to hunt with now. But it is unfortunate that Cooper let that one out the door. It doesn't give me confidence in buying one of their products. Warranty is a very poor substitute for doing it right the first time.

Send it back , get a refund off cooper , buy a win70 safari in 416 rem mag. Unfortunately you will have to use a loaner this time but there is no way i would take that rifle dg hunting , i just wouldn't have confidence in it.

Ok probably last update before we fly out. Again guys thank you for all the advice. Just took the rifle out. Cooper told me they ran 25 rounds through the gun. I cleaned the barrel then shot 15 more rounds through her.

No problems with the bolt trigger, iron sites ect ect.

Here are my last 3 shots at 100 yards.

I'll defenitely be posting pictures when I "return". :Nailbiting:

Good luck - enjoy the journey and be safe;)

Hopefully all went well. That bolt is what nightmares are made of.

I sure hope the lion is not only in the salt but a great lasting memory for
@Obi Wan Kenobi

I guess he is lucky the rifle didn't blow up in his face and cause serious injury. I don't think I could trust a rifle ever again if I shot it and bolt broke. I hope whoever built it is no longer building rifles........
