Depth of Cape Buffalo Shoulder Mount

Regrettably, no. Finding studs is part of my trophy presentation planning.
You could get help from the McDowell Creek Community

You're thinking of the minor reinforcement @Red Leg added to the gun room walls.
Ah yes. There was that trivial bit of steel. Hadn't considered it, but it likely would hold a buff - all of him. Though driving a nail could be tricky.

I will start building my retirement house very soon and will have a 20'x30' man cave with 16' +tall ceiling. Walls with be backed with 3/4" plywood and then sheetrock.

That sounds awesome. Please send & share details during the process. I'd love to see & hear.

Well this is going to be interesting... my buffalo is being stitched up into a pedastal wall mount as we speak... this thread is helpful!

Side question, has anybody spaned the gap in between studs with plywood and then sheeted with dry wall? We are building new and was considering doing this in some key areas for heavier mounts. My theory is it will be more secure and give more freedom for exact placement. Crazy?
We filled in spaces between studs in likely place with leftover floor joist material. Nice to be able to put the beast a little this way or that way. I attached a picture to show where we stuck some extra boards above the future gas fire place.

That's exactly what I mean! Sounds like the overwhelming opinion is to do "something" like that

Thanks!

I did the same thing with my fire place knowing was going to hang my elk there, that way you don't have to have your mount off center if the stud isn't centered on the fire place.

Here's the final product (excuse the clutter). I have some small animals to add yet, but having wood between the studs made life easier. We did this in other places in the studs as well. I also took pictures to remember where we put the extra wood.

My buffalo mount is right at 4 foot from wall to nose tip, they really are a large animal both dead and alive! I also reinforced behind the sheet rock with plywood when building my house (hard to do- to retro fit an existing wall). I have seen some buffalo mounts that are more of the "head" and not so much of the shoulders...they don't stick out from the wall as much, but personally I don't like the way they look...my personal preference I guess. A pedestal mount could be an option but still takes up quite a bit of room abet not necessarily wall space. Good luck Iwaters with your decision and post a picture when you get it done.

Mine is four feet. I hired a company that hangs art in homes and commercial buildings. They confirmed the location of the studs I found when deciding the location for my mounts and the mounts seem very stable.

Got to shoot him first. Just thinking ahead. I will have to remove built in ironing board and can put a two by six block between studs. Going hunting in August.

Hi EGS

I read your thread with interest. Would you mind sending me that PDF? May I put it on my website?
