I read your hunt report and understand but it looks like somebody shot him right in front of the ear on his right side.
Where did your first shot hit the beast?
 
Hi CAustin, yes this shot took it down, but it was the fouth one.... I got pictures of the other side, I can post it if you want.
First one was on the other site and a bit too low. As it came out of the water spilling blood like a fountain it was frontal to me and the second one hit it in die skull and cut the flesh open but went outside again after few cm. Third one was PH it went in the neck.
The one that you see is the final one, luckily I´m sitting on the right sight of the hippo so it Looks like a one shot kill but it is not.

I can deliver a list of excuses why it happened, but after all I have to admit: Bad Shooting!

The Pappy is for when I retire Art! That bottle is in the safe now!
 
Folks I am now 37 days from departure. I've been working so much that I haven't been able to get back to the range yet but will work that out! Everything is packed but I have to go back through it all at least once more!
I can't wait to get back to Africa! I'm really looking forward to seeing the new Pawprint Safari Lodge and staying there! The pictures @billc has been sharing with the forum about the lodge indicates Pieter and his team have done a lot of work getting ready for the hunting season. Hope somebody gets a sable in the next couple of weeks so they can age some steaks!
 
@Silence your picture diagram in pretty spot on, the blood gushing and swirling in the water, I have seen several times. Were you hunting from a dugout?
 
Simon in your experience are most hippo shots in the water taken from the side of the animal or head on?
 
Charlie, the way we hunted hippo on the Zambezi, quite different to most hippo hunting, we would drift down the river on wooden dugouts, anchor with poles to balance the dugout for the shot, I have only been on dry land once with hippo. It's one hell of rush when you take the shot, never know where the rest of the hippo are going.

If the hippo sees us and submerges, most times it's a frontal shot as when he comes up he's looking at us. It pretty fast shooting as he doesn't give you much time.
 
@CAustin , most of the section of the Zambezi where we hunted is over 1.5 miles wide, with plenty sand banks, large areas of the banks covered in reeds too thick to penetrate. Charlie, this hippo iI shot for government rations, we were in a rush to get back to leopard blind, I used 300wm with soft, one shot in the back of the head.

Thank you for sharing the photos Simon. So a 300 WM did the trick? WOW. Then a 375 H&H with soft points should be plenty.
 
Yes Charlie, your 375 H&H Mag. is more than capable. I do not recall Simon saying what bullet he used in his 300 WM other than that it was soft. Given your previous preference for using Hornady DGS & DGX bullets I'm sure you have been reading the many posts regarding the failures many AH members have had with the DGX. I was wondering if you had begun rethinking your choice of bullets.

It does have several things in it for folks I know in Africa that's maybe give pounds. I started the roll aboard and only need a couple of things in it and I'm done.
Anyone want to place bets on how many times I unpack and repackage the bags.

I too have the Pelican suitcases, actually I have lots of Pelican stuff, but the weight can be a problem flying. Now if I just had a business class ticket......

@Shootist43 , was locally made PMP 180 gr. @CAustin I wouldn't want softs for a charge, I had my 458wm with solids between my legs. Best thing, listen to your PH.

Art I don't actually have any Hornady Ammo for the 375. I will be using federal premium Cape Shok in Bear Claws and Swift Aframes.
