Hello fellow hunters,

I've joined the forum to get general information on African hunting; I've booked a combination bow/rifle hunt in South Africa for the end of May 2019. This site looks to be a wealth of information and experience - thanks Jerome for setting up and maintaining it!

Welcome to AH Bill! Nice to have you posting and let us know if you have any specific question. Have fun exploring the site... (y)

Welcome aboard! Lots of info on this site!

Welcome to AH sir. Hope you find everything your looking for.

Welcome to AH.
One more Canadian won't hurt.

With whom are you hunting? and what?

Welcome from a fellow Albertan

Thank you for your welcome messages!

I've booked a 12-day safari with WR Hunting Safaris and I'm looking to harvest a zebra, black wildebeest, impala, kudu, springbuck, and warthog; if opportunity permits I'd love to get a gemsbok as well.

I'd like to get as many as possible from a blind with my bow, but as I mentioned to the PH's Canadian representatives, I want to "put some boots on the ground" so I'll hire one of his rifles if he thinks it's appropriate for that species.

My lovely bride of 31 years will be coming along as an observer - she's always wanted to go to Africa too - and I'm trying my very best to convince her to take an animal of her own. At the very least I'm going to get her a Tanzanite ring while we're doing the "tourist thing" in Cape Town.

Welcome aboard Bill. This is the right place to get answers to all you questions. What type of game have you hunted in the past? What caliber rifles do you have, what kind of bow do you shoot, do you reload?

Welcome! I'll bet your going to get a little impatient waiting for your hunt. I'd go nuts waiting that long!
Best to you and your bride! Hope you can convince her to pull the trigger!

Yes, I'm soooo stoked and I (we) still have 25 months to wait. <sigh>

I've hunted the traditional Alberta fare: WT and mule deer, moose, elk, and migratory and upland birds. Black bear are on my wish list.

In addition to numerous shotguns and rimfires, I have a 7mm Rem Mag, 350 Rem Mag, 303 SMLE, a pre-64 30-30, and a 50 inline muzzle loader (my current favourite). I used to reload for the 350 and my .38 when I shot PPC, but I've sold my reloading gear and the .38.

I did buy a new Bowtech Carbon Icon last year, and it's a great fit for me - it's certainly leaps and bounds ahead of the old Bear Mag 44 compound bow that I used to own! I'll be taking it out for bow season in Alberta this year as well as a guided black bear hunt in Ontario in May 2018 (my wife is from ON and we're visiting her family, so I managed to sweet-talk her into a week's diversion).

Gee I thought Alberta had tons of black bears? So your going to Ontario to hunt?
I've been trying to call in a black bear here in Colorado, but I run out of lung capacity pretty quickly. Not alouded to use e-callers here for anything but varmints (coyotes, bobcats, raccoons, etc.)

Welcome to AH!

We do have tons of black bear in Alberta but hunting them is something that never appealed to me until a year or so ago.

I'm pretty clueless about bear hunting, and I would have booked a hunt here in Alberta but I didn't want to give the guide the impression that I booked it just to figure out where to hunt on my own later on. It just seemed cheesy to me.

Since my wife's home province of Ontario has a lot of bears and we're going there anyway, I figured that I could sneak away for a week just prior to visiting her family.

Welcome back from Alberta! That 25 month wait is going to be painful, better hop on an offer here for this year!

Thanks Aaron - I'd love to go prior to 2019, but my "Lotto 649 retirement plan" hasn't come through yet. :(

Good luck with your bear hunt.

Thanks, Brickburn! I'll try spot-and-stalk here at home this Spring and Autumn, but I'm really looking forward to my first guided hunt next May. I'm planning to ask lots of questions so that I can apply that insight when I return.

I would be interested in it if you pass. Please send me the info on the gun shop if you do not buy it. I have the needed ammo and brass.
Thanks,
Ross
