Either I'm missing something, or Amazon has some amazing prices on Leupold scopes right now.

Leupold VX-3i 3.5-10x 40 mm:

Cabelas, Bear Basin, and so on: $399.99

Amazon: $310* https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B018YKYBVG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

* The Amazon price fluctuates like the stock market. I bought at $319. But shipping is free.

I'm curious about this, the description says "imported" as far as I know the rifle scopes are all made in the U.S. I do know some of the other Leupold optics are imported. Does anyone know the scoop on the VX3i ?

The one I just bought says "designed, machined, and assembled in the USA," which for me is enough to consider the scopes made in the US.

For a long time it's been no secret that the Leupold scope lens are made in Taiwan. Other components may be made abroad too. I still think Leupold can rightfully claim they're made in the US.

Having owned genuine vx3 scopes, beware there also! The only one I've personally owned that was worth salt was the 2-7x33. A reasonable optic for say a 30-30 or other lever gun on modest budget.

The 2-7 was actually a VX2 or VARI-XII theVX3 was a 2.5-8. I have both of these scopes and I really like them both. The 2.5-8 I have is actually a VX3i and it has very good glass, not in the same class as the Schott optical lenses that Zeiss uses or S&B but as good as anything else I have seen in it's price range.

You can avoid the risk if you are a state Hunter Education Instructor. Leupold gives a serious discount for one purchase per year for certified hunter ed instructors. the purchases are made directly through Leupold so there is no risk of a knock-off.

I recently got a price on a Leupold VX-3i 3.5-10x40mm scope from bhphotovideo.com for $320. It was listed on their site at $399 with an 'email me a better price' option. The quote in the email was $320 with a code to use at checkout.
Also optics planet sometimes will price match - if you are unsure about the amazon seller.

I'm surprised to see you say that, Rookhawk. Where does Leupold come up short, as far as you're concerned?

@RolandtheHeadless ive only bought Vx2 and vx3 product, never "the good stuff". I bought a 1.5-5x24 and found it to have the worst light gathering of any scope I've ever owned. I had some Of the 3-9x scopes and they were so-so.

For similar money I started buying the old USA made Zeiss conquest line and that was really the beginning of obsession. I started noticing "real Zeiss" was better yet. Then it became entry Swarovski, then it was straight tube swaro and Schmidt.

So once I concluded the really entry level was bad I started to find more expensive stuff I believed was better than "good" Leupold and never went back to buy their premium stuff.

Specific defects / shortcomings to answer your question: light gathering, night use, reticles, tube size, clarity.

I've bought just about every scope I've ever owned on optics planet. Excellent customer service and prices. My local shop once told me he pays more for the scope than what I bought it for.

It is true that optics planet has priced cheaper than most dealer cost. I avoid OP because it's in my state so I pay tax.

A couple tips: you can haggle with OP, if you ask for best price they will give you a lower price over phone.

EuroOptic and cameralandny.com have better pricing on the "premium brands" to consider as well. Neil at Cameraland is a rock star when it comes to finding an open box scope for less. He seems to come up with one almost every time since open box can be discounted further without losing your dealership. ;)

I was hoping that would be your reply. I've used Leupold all my life and have never had a failure and always found the lenses to be more than satisfactory. I tried several other brands that were in the same ballpark but always defaulted back to Leupold. Several years back I had my first brush with optics that were truly of better quality with a benchrest Nightforce. Then I made the very expensive mistake of picking up a top of the line Swarovski. I still have a lot of Leupold in my safe but when it comes to a new big game rifle it's always Swarovski. Dollar for dollar Leupold is good stuff but there's really no comparison in terms of quality.

You and I are in 100% agreement.

I have always ordered direct from leupold, normally from the custom shop and they seem to be the going price or slightly cheaper.

That is a fantastic price!
