Two gun case recommendations

I would agree. There is no way that could happen without the case being broken in two as well.

@wipartimer, I've been using the same pelican case and just buying and cutting new foam depending on the rifle/shotgun combo I'm carrying that particular trip. The Pelicans are a bit heavy (mine has wheels) but bomb proof.

Actually, I did buy a Pelican three weeks ago. My foam cutting isn't pretty, but it works.

So how much do those cases weight per @rookhawk? I ask as I have considered the same case, but I don't see how you can stay under the 50# limit.

the two gun case weighs 27lbs. Add two rifles without scopes plus the locks and you slide under 50lbs coach limit.

The three gun case weighs 33lbs. Add 2 rifles and a shotgun or three rifles, plus locks, you're under the 70lb biz class limit or you're in the $50 overweight charge for coach limit.

Either way, you're golden.

I unfold a handle on top and put my carry on duffle on it with two bungee cords fastening the duffle down. That allows me to roll my rifles and carry on in one hand and my rolling checked bag with empty gun cases, clothes, trail cams and ammo in the other hand.

I'm an airport survivor!

I'm thinking that's a TuffPak locked with a TSA lock that everyone and their cousin Martha has a key to at the airport. Rifle was removed and stock destroyed intentionally. There were two rifles in that case and the other made it through with no problems. If both rifles were subjected to the same abuse, I'd think the other would show signs too.

I'm not a huge fan of the TuffPak, but I wouldn't blame this on that case.

Question answered. I guess it boils down to if I want to spend the extra $50 for a third rifle.

While I appreciate some people don't like Tuffpaks (I've traveled the world with mine and never even had a rifle lose zero) but simple physics says there is no way that rifle was damaged in the case. There just isn't enough room inside the case for that kind of leverage to break the stock in that manner. I'll continue to use mine with confidence and a real lock!

On one of my trips through Joberg when I went to retrieve my gun case from the oversize luggage department, I saw an aluminum 2 gun flat case that was bowed so bad in the middle that guns inside had to be ruined. I'm not joking, the case had a 4" bow in the middle. I also saw a Pelican case that apparently someone had driven over with a truck for the plastic was cracked from one end to the other with pieces missing. I'm guessing the same truck drove over both cases. I admit that this was just plain extreme and malicious baggage handling. I use a Tuffpak and have gotten along well with it. Is it perfect, probably not but I don't know of any gun case that is. I do like the ability to pack clothes and other stuff in the Tuffpak case. I had a large sock made for mine and I just pull the entire sock out going through TSA and Customs. Makes life simple for me to get to the guns for inspection.

By the time you pack your Tuffpack, there is no room for movement within the the case and the rifle(s) are padded by the soft case, clothes etc. I will continue to use mine. Saves one bag with the ability to pack clothes etc in with the rifle.

This is the one thing I will change before I next trip. I chose the padlock version of the tuffpak, although I don't use a TSA lock. It seems to me now that the keyed lock will be harder to get into and I've never liked the play in the padlock.

When I get around to it I'm going to order the key system and change the lock.

Downside in my opinion on the tuffpack is if it gets " lost" you have nothing. Clothes ,gun gone. You can always borrow a gun from the PH. I own a Pelican and other than the weight with two guns in it I always have no fear of damage or the scope losing zero.

next time you cut the foam, use one of those cheap electric carving knives. It worked like a hot knife thru butter for me. My 30-06 fits like an undersized glove in there! The less pretty side is down, but one side has crisp lines.

I've used a Tuffpak my two trips going to Namibia. The first time was L.A. to Frankfurt to Windhoek with no problems. The second trip was L.A. to Zurich to Johannesburg to Windhoek. On the second trip when the baggage handler in Windhoek brought my case in for inspection you could see that the lock was missing and had been cut or ripped off with marks on the lock attachment on the case. I had two rifles one for my son and one for me. Both were in soft cases but mine was a wood stock and was broken at the pistol grip inline with the grain. I the Tuffpak and don't think it was the problem. I've have also used Pelican cases and have had no problems with them but they are heavier and carry less stuff. But both are good in my opinon.

Now THAT looks like a shock break. Notice the difference between this and hanks? This one is at an angle and follows the grain- hanks was across it. It didn't start at the butt, however it did start exactly where the trigger guard was- the cutout for it causing a minor structural weakness that was just enough to start the break when shocked from an end on drop. Think the difference between the 2 speaks for itself.

Have you seen the Chevy commercial where they drop a metal tool box at just the right angle into the aluminum bed of a Ford pickup truck? Punches a hole in it.

If the Tuffpak is riding around the baggage carousel and a small but heavy bag comes up the conveyor belt and then down and hits the Tuffpak at precisely the right angle, I think it might be possible to do some damage. I think the Tuffpak has enough flex to compress and pop back to normal.

Now saying that, if I had a Tuffpak, I'd keep using it and maybe get some more foam padding.
