Hunting reports

Since I'll be going to Africa in a few months I've been reading every book I could get my hands onto about hunting in Africa. I've read things from way back in the before time all the way through to modern hunting and some of the stories they tell are amazing. I know people don't like to brag around here ;) so I thought I'd open up a post for folks to share stories or experiences where a hunt was busted, not by the prey, but by a fellow predator!

A friend of mine decided to sleep under the stars one night on his September elk hunt. He was rather rudely awakened by a black bear sniffing/licking his face. Does that count? :D

In October when my wife and I were at Serapa, we headed out on the day I took my lioness with the intent of stopping for anything that my wife may want to hunt. She was all setup for the longest time waiting for a young bull eland to clear away from the big mature bull she would take. We were downwind, they hadn't a clue we were there when they suddenly took off. Turned out the lioness we were after decided the eland needed to be hunted too.

Oh yes. Just delayed for a few moments! But delay/interrupted none the less.

I had a mtn lion steal an elk I shot the night before in Montana on a archery hunt. Tracked the elk and for the life of me could not figure out we the elk kept getting on of it beds as we left him overnight so we would not push him out of his bed. As we were following the blood trail I looked up to see something brown walking between me and my friend. As I looked closer the mtn lion walked in between us no more then 20 yds away and I never heard a sound as he came from behind us. We left him go on his way and later when we checked we saw he was on the elks trail and had found it not to long after we saw him. He drug that bull into some of the nastiest dead falls I have seen. We could not even safely follow were he went in so we left it go. They went back a week later but never found my elk

I was once drawing a bead on a deer when my friends wife's cat came trotting down the old snake rail fence and scared it off. Needless to say my aim shifted to the cat and it took a miracle of self control to stop me converting that furry pest into a grease spot.

Cool stories..

My predator interruptions are limited to coyotes in the deer woods.. (nothing exciting or cool)...

I was in a ground blind some 75 yards up a ridge overlooking a deer feeder. I was watching some does and a covey of quail when I noticed a bobcat stalking in. He finally ran and started swatting at the bobwhites as they were taking off. The deer split during the fray. The bobcat got two quail down as I recall.

Another bobcat came in to my turkey decoy the same time two gobblers were closing into range. Popped him...nasty, mangy cat.

I was sitting in a ground blind for whitetails and watching a couple of does and a young buck. Suddenly the deer all came to attention and took off. About a minute later a pack of wolves came through right where the deer had been. Had zero deer at that site for three days after that.

Another time I was calling for moose and at one break between calls I turned around to check behind me and saw a black bear standing 20 yards away watching me. Never heard him sneak in, which gave me the heebie-jeebies! To add insult to injury, when I got back to my quad, I found that he had torn up the vinyl on my seat!

Yes I have often used including by an eagle, coyote and bobcat.

Turkeys are not fond of any of these things.

Also had a turkey hunt interrupted by a mock dogfight of f-16's but they are a very different kind of predator in the sky.

I had a wolf chase off a Bull moose in northern Alberta this year while I was bow hunting! Unfortunately he was too far off for a shot with a stick!

While hunting in a pit blind for geese I had a black bear charge out of some nearby bush and attack my decoys and upon biting into a mouthful of plastic he promptly ran back into the bush!

Now that's funny!

and you didn't shoot behind him to scare the crap out of him?

I ought to have done just that, but I just stood there in total disbelief. I even remembering saying to my buddy in the blind "you saw that too right?"

Had a wolf interrupt a moose hunt in B.C. luckily I had a wolf tag, now I have a wolf. No moose yet. Had a bobcat interrupt a deer hunt once, shot him at 15 ft. I have a bobcat mount now. Was fishing off Maui had a mahi on and the line went heavy, then light. Finished reeling in and had a half fish left, a shark had bitten him in two. About once a year we have coyotes interupt a deer hunt, sometimes we shoot them, sometimes we wait. Had an eagle take off with the trout on my line in Colorado once, he got the trout and my lure. Have had lions tracking the kudu we were tracking. Didn't get to see them, just the tracks. This is going to be fun to hear everyone's stories.

Hilarious.
Had a pack of Coyotes sneak up on my Decoys and charge in. When nothing moved they were a bit stunned. I helped their speedy egress with some noise from my 12 gauge.

Did you give them an ounce or so of persuasion in the backside?

Was fall turkey hunting many years ago and took a friend I had not hunted with much. We set up about 40 yards apart, and I began calling. No response, kept after it for about 20 minutes, still nothing. All of a sudden, a shotgun blast almost gave me a concussion. I jumped up and was ready to tear him a new one when he said, "Wait, look behind where you were sitting." I turned around and saw the bobcat he had shot 4yds behind me. He has a bobcat mount now. Not exactly a predator interruption, but close.

I'm not sure how I'd have taken that situation. Most likely not take him out again, but maybe. At least he's good for rear security!
