Has there been any 'magnum' 404 (.423") cartridges? I know the 404 Jeff is loaded hotter nowadays but I mean different parent cases.
I imagine they'll be wildcats, I'm only aware of ones based on 300wm/338wm/458wm nothing bigger. There is no real reason for asking, just curious.

No.

A 404 is the parent for cartridges itself, not a child.

The reason for the .404 is that it will function in non-magnum actions.

We tolerate the expensive brass, expensive bullets with limited choice in .423 because it's a .404 Jeffery.

Otherwise, you'd opt for something bigger if you were forced into a magnum action.

if you want more power then a 404 Jeffery then the 416 Rigby is the best choice.

Interesting question. It's my understanding that the 404 is quite a fine round for hunting in Africa. I know @Wheels has one that packs a real punch in the field.

404 is parent case to:

375 RUM

375-404

300RUM

Probably others.

Not that I know of.

The 404 Jeff has more than enough just the way it is, no need to try and "improve" on it. Exceptional cartridge. Same can be said of the 416 Rigby.

Oh I agree that the 404 is more than good enough. I was just thinking and realised that every calibre (near as damn it) has the really big cased, tear away of the group along with the golden child but not in .423".
For example, we have the 375 h&h and the 375 RUM/378 Weatherby/others. The 458 Lott and the 460 Weatherby/450 Rigby/other Wildcats. But the 404 stands alone in .423" as the most powerful.
There isn't even "common sense" ones like 404-416 Rigby/Rem.

All of the golden child cartridges are all you'll ever need but doesn't stop people going bigger. Curious as to why it's not been done with 404 cal.

Previously, on another forum, a member mentioned and upload a diagram of a 404 Magnum..it has a larger case and was in all departments bigger/faster than the standard 404 Jeffery we know. This person even has a reamer of the 404 Magnum Jeffery..I will see if I can get hold of that thread..I really was interested to send a barrel to him to ream it for me ....(y)(y)

Cheers Gert, I'd be very interested to know what it's based on. I knew there must be one out there, wildcatters can't help it!

Nice, so it's a 460 Weatherby with no belt which is a 416 Rigby.
Due to the larger bullet diameter, using the Rigby case, it should out perform 416 Rigby when like-for-like pressure.

With the 460 Weatherby case (minus the belt) it should out perform the 416 Weatherby for the same reasons.

Either way, that's crazy potent!

I would rather read it as a 404 Shuler Magnum..it just sound better..(y)(y)(y)

Yeah gotta give your wildcat a cool name, especially if it's proprietary.

I wonder how this caliber will perform....it surely is something in a 500 Jeffery class...(y)

Well presuming a bullet could hold up to it, i would say it would be just as effective as 416 Rigby.

All the other Jeffery cartridges.

Rum, WSM, WSSM, Rsaum

Most Dakota cartridges.

.26, .28, .30 Nosler.

Many, many cartridges call the .404 it's parent.

I bet 80% of all cartridges is wide use are based on only three: .404, .375 and 30-06.

If you really want to read up about history on cartridge/caliber development ..read up on the story off The Imperial Magnum calibers...that is where the calibers that was used to create the WSM ect came from...Imperial Magnum calibers...was first..before all the calibers that used the 404 Jeffery case ...If you want to read the story..pm me I will send you info about the Designer, Aubrey White , a Canadian who created powerful calibers based on the 404 Jeffery case...

I have read about the Imperial Magnums in Cartridges of the World but I always like to know more so yes, please do send me the info about Aubrey White.
Thank you.
