Hunting reports

Hello all from Canada.
I have yet to have the honor of hunting the dark Continent but have dreamed of doing so since childhood.
I am at the beginning stages of planning a trip I hope to realize in a couple of years.
My number one question is does anyone offer a old school traditional fairchase unfenced hunt where you camp out every night without returning to a camp with modern conveniences?
Basically I would like to experience it like they did 100years ago.
Thank you for all comments and info I look forward to spending some time on this site.

Ask away sir with all the questions you like. Yes there are outfitters on this site that can take you to a tented camp.

There are certainly more remote tented camps.

Welcome! Lots of knowledge and experience to draw from on this site!

Welcome. You will not find a better place to gain knowledge about Africa hunting, than right here.

Those hunts are offered but aren't as popular as the farm based lodges. At my age I am too attached to cold beer, hot showers and indoor plumbing to camp out in the middle of BFN. There are many outfitters here who would be happy to taylor a hunt to your needs. Post a want ad in the appropriate forum and you will get plenty of offers.

This place is a fantastic resource with good people to help you out

That was our dream for our first African safari as well and we did find an operator in Namibia that did it and it was an incredible experience but he is no longer in business and it seems hunts like this are nearly impossible to find anymore. There are loads of free-range hunts available and some in some very remote locations but the bulk are based out of permanent or semi-permanent tent camps. The logistics of a mobile camp are extremely onerous and taking care of meat and trophies becomes extremely difficult. Perhaps look at one of the more remote tent camps and see if camping out for a night or two is an option. I suspect yu could find outfitters that would do that for you. Camping out in a pup tent is a pretty cool experience in Africa.

The alternative to a tent is the kind of camp you will find in some of the countries such as Mozambique, Benin, Ethiopia and others. I recall @Traditional Mozambique Safaris posting pictures of his place and it looked pretty rustic to me. Logistically more permanent than a camp but still not the Ritz. I think there is an increase in the personal risk factor to consider and maybe not the best for a first hunt. Guess it depends on your personal life experiences.

That Tent Camp has to be packed up every year and hauled away.
Water for your shower is heated over an open fire and smells of smoke.
The "dining room" , "kitchen" etc., are all made from grass and wood each year.

A great idea and very nostalgic for sure. Most tent camps are going to big 5 Safaris that may cost more than you want for your first one. Very few tent camps that I know of for plains game. From what you are describing I think you would do well anywhere in Namibia for your first Safari.
Regards,
Philip

On the free range vrs a high fence hunt, you will never realize that you are in a high fenced area on the majority of the high fence hunts. I know that I would not of realized it if we hadn't used the fence line road to get into a area to hunt. Other than that the animals quite possibly didn't know it either the farm was so large.

I can understand you wanting to do a old fashion tent safari camp but you will really enjoy one out of a lodge. That hot shower, cold beverages, indoor plumbing, and a soft bed go a long ways to make you feel pampered during your hunt.

Welcome to AH!

Welcome!

The ZimParks has several places where they have "camps" set aside. By camp, it means a toilet (broken) and a shower (broken) in a concrete block cube with a plastic water tower next to it. The other amenities are a skinning shed that is caged (most important thing) and a kitchen storage area for produce and cooking supplies. (also in disrepair)

Your trusty outfitter and their team of about 10 will clean these places up, pitch all the tents, pump the river water into the water tower, bring copper tubing and an oven to heat the water for the shower and get the toilet working. Other than those few amenities all else is truly fly camp tented living. Elephant tripping over your tent ropes. Leopard killing a baboon 200 yards away. Crocs and Hippo at the shore. Etc.

Keep this in mind: the less amenities you want, the more you'll pay for your trip! (seriously)

When first world living is brought out to a place 4 hours from the nearest power pole you're going to be paying for the logistics, supplies and the amount of staff required to make it an amazing trip. I wouldn't have it any other way myself but it does cost more than a south African lodge that is high fenced.

Enjoy your research!

Appreciating all the comments guys.
This site is gonna kill alot of time for me.
I have nothing against hunting behind a fence or out of a plush camp as I believe as hunters we should support each other as long as we are operating legally and enjoying the experience but for my first one I really would like it to be rustic.
I have spent up to six weeks solo hunting in the Alberta bush not the same for sure but I do have a self reliant streak that runs pretty deep.

One question of pure curiousity I have is has anyone tried zebra and how does it taste?
For some reason they have always looked delicious to me.

Yes. I eat it every safari. It tastes very strange. I like goat, I like lamb, I like all strong game. Zebra is a strong game flavor but does not taste like anything else I've had. It tastes like the color blue to me! :) don't know how to describe it.

Hello and welcome to AH. We can offer a hunt like that in Mozambique! get in contact with us if you need more information.

Consider this option. The hunt you want is probably found in Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia or Tanzania...that's where most fly camps take place.

Also, research gun travel restrictions and embargos to these places for Canadians as some may be a problem.
