Suggestions for books/movies for the long plane ride

In just one month from now I am taking my entire family (all 6 of us!) to Africa. I am already packed and ready to go for the most part except for reading material and/or movies on the iPod. So I am curious if anyone has any suggestions for movies/books about Africa that you like for the plane ride?
 
I read horn of the hunter by ruark is a great read. Death in the long grass is an exciting read! I listened to the audiobook story of the man eaters of tsavo and thought it was excellent! I have read a few others if you'd like to get a few more titles I can certainly send more I read while going to Africa, in Africa and wishing I were there! Haha
 
Also before I forget one of my personal favorites is The Greens Hills of Africa by Ernest Hemingway
 
On a 1,000 mile drive, I listened to "White Hunter". Awesome history from 1800s through 1960s.
"The Ghost and the Darkness" was a good video of Val Kilmer and Michael Douglas.
Any of Robert Ruarks books are a good read.
Capsticks are all exciting reads as well.
Not many books on Africa in audio. Nor Ruark, Hemingway, all the old hunters.

+1 on that. When I flew over on Delta, I actually got tired of watching movies and had to get up and walk around a little to keep the blood supply going in my legs. Hopefully you were able to upgrade to business class and get a couch to lay down in. My next trip will for sure be in there, I was only 2 or 3 rows from there both ways and was so jealous.

Enjoy your trip, it'll be so much fun and memories to last a life time. And you'll be dreaming and planning your next trip as you fly back home, careful of Africa, it's the most addicting drug a guy could take.

SAA. Last time I went the movie selection was OK but the quality wasn't that great.

You are so right @WestCo , on my way home on the first trip I relived the hunt over and over again in my head. I don't think I watched any movies or read anything!
 
The covenant by James Michiner.

Two volume novel. You can get a used copy for around $1-2

He starts around 15,000 BC and ends with the final breaths of Apartheid. All done in classic Michiner style.

It explains why Africa is amazing and why Africa is screwed up in a personal, cause and effect style.

It was a banned book in some countries for a period of time, probably for making every character group seem noble and flawed at the same time.
 
African/English history in which hunting is an important part, but not hunting books per se:
EXPLORERS OF THE NILE by Tim Neal and STANLEY by Tim Neal.

Both are covering the exploration of the African interior which was totally unknown to the west (spelled British Empire).
 
As far as fiction goes, Wilbur Smith's books are mostly set in Africa in different time settings. Not specifically hunting, but some of them have elephant hunting in them. Great author.
 
J. Alain Smith has 3 books that I have and thought they were really good. Adventures In The Wild Places, Hunting New Horizons and Close Calls And Hunting Adventures. Excellent reads. He also has several novels that I have not read but I suspect would be good.
He is a hunter and all(every cent) of the money from the books go to SCI. He had(has) a TV show about hunting and it was(is) very good.
 
A Tom Clancy novel will keep you busy!
 
Lufthansa and Air Namibia had a good enough selection I never touched mine. I actually try to distract myself from the upcoming hunt so if I had to load up for a long trip I'd pick a series with a short run so I'd either be able to watch it all coming and going or eind it up when I got back. Penny Dreadful concerning all the Victorian science fiction stories woven together was great and only three seasons. I believe Black Sails about the 1700's Carribean pirates is winding up on it's fourth.

Whatever movies/documentaries are available on the plane, and sleeping pills!
