Hunting attire

High boots mean no wet feet, no snakes, and no gaiters; but I could go for something that stopped just below the knee and maybe lace up. Hahaha I occasionally ponder WW1 style wrap gaiters....

Well don't know if it's dressing up but on the shooting school I wear collar tie and tweed waistcoat (it's our uniform)

Shooting pheasant partridge and grouse full tweed plus fours vest shirt tie but modern green goretex.

Deer modern material traditional colours.

Africa tough cotton trousers sometimes shorts and bush shirt cotton again.

I love this thread. Hunting is a want, not a need, and African hunting (as well as upland or driven birds) is the want of wants. I very much believe in dressing the part, since it's a big share of the experience and the romance of this delightfully passé activity. Of course, I believe that every hunter has the right to wear his favorite and most comfortable gear, but to me it's nice to give a nod back to days and times when wearing the appropriate elegant clothes for any occasion--very much including hunting--was the norm.

In the end, I think dressing the part is not unlike carrying a vintage rifle. It adds a lot of flavor and panache to an activity that *is* based on flavor and panache. Good thread.

I thought as I read your comments: I wonder which part of San Francisco he resides- but then I saw Alexandria, VA, a suburb of DC. One more reason to drain the swamp. Wear whatever you like to your "want"; I'll attend to my "needs".

I can agree that dressing is "not unlike" carrying a vintage rifle. I'm a big proponent of the Rigby, and Jefferys, and others. And I believe that dressing the part adds to the enjoyment of a hunt. A portion of that enjoyment - a big portion, in my case - comes from it being 'different' from what I do every day. Dressing adds to the difference, and that's good. Having said that though, all of these guys are wearing too many clothes and wearing clothes which would be way to hot for me! My dad used to garden in a tie. I garden in shorts. You can be comfortable and still be different.

I would draw the line at pith helmets though!

Excuse me? I think in your petulant quip, you totally missed my point. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt since I *do* know that Internet communication can be misleading in tone, but come on.

My saying that hunting is a want is in no way meant as derogatory--as you could have easily gleaned by the fact that I am on a hunting site, post about hunting and obviously enjoy it enough to dream of Africa. African hunting is a wonderful want, one that is the tip of the pyramid of any leisure activity that a man can engage in. I could get as petty as you and suggest that the first swamp you need to drain is that between your ears, but I'll just leave it at this: it is a good idea to think before posting, especially before attacking fellow members of a forum after totally misunderstanding their post.

Oh, and particular low blow: an attack on where I live. Reminder: who did WA go for in the next 3 elections? ;-)
