as above guys would you take a Ruger number 1 out to Africa with you being as its only a single shot and not that fast to reload ?

Thanks

Wayne

Quite a few of my clients use the Ruger no 1. Never had a problem. @CAustin used one on numerous animals over here.

@Wayne t I have three Ruger #1 rifles. The one in 300 win mad has seen the most duty taking 23 trophies between me and my son.
Including this 38 inch eland pictured above. Heart shot him at 240 yards.

Make the first shot count, the "rest" of them won't matter. Besides that, with a little practice you can reload rather quickly. When using a single shot, it is just like the "old days" i.e. aim small miss small!!

I also took a Ruger 1 in 300 WM on my rifle safari. I shot it six times at five animals, only shooting a warthog twice since my PH was concerned that there were many holes in the area it could go down. All other animals were down in the 50-100 yard.
On an earlier trip I did with a bow my PH had a neoprene cover to protect his rifle from the thorns so I got one before the trip and my rifle came back in excellent shape.

I own 13 No 1s in various calibers and shoot 3 on a regular basis (270, 338, 9.3). I had no issues with a model 1 in 9.3x74 on my hunt in Namibia this last summer. I took 11 animals and shot 11 times (not including my 3 sighting rounds upon arrival). I will say, it is a conversation starter, especially in the caliber that I was using but my response is: The rifle will only do so much, it gets to a point, it's the shooter that matters. I use a model 1 in 338 WM for hunting in Alaska (bear, moose, caribou) and have had no issues though I did have to polish the safety down a little to allow the shells to eject faster without a hangup. So, as to your question, I would say that you would have no issues with taking a model 1. Just remember, practice like you would in the field.

I had one in .270 Win and it was a beautiful rifle. Nice shooting and quick reloading. In a moment of stupidity, I sold it. Definitely regret that move.

I don't have as many No 1s as @AKSloper71 but I absolutely trust the three that I have. The Ruger 1 pictured to the far right is the one I would have no hesitation whatsoever using on DG. It is a 458 Lott. It was my backup rifle last year on a DG hunt. The one to the left is a 375 H&H that I look forward to using.

Cheers for the imput guys :)

There was a couple of Reasons behind asking first was would be good enough for a quick second shot if needed and secondly I was really trying to talk myself out of having one guess that didn't work I've got a customers sat in the workshop in 416 rem mag I can have cheap and there's a few around right now in the magnum calibers cheap they just don't hold the money in the uk at all most get bought used on one hunt and sold on

Thanks

Wayne

Well, Wayne, like anything, it's about personal preference. I've had many rifles over the years and can say that at one time or another that I have loved each and every one. There's just something about the No 1 that holds my heart though I have strayed many times to military rifles or bolt rifles, but like a first love, I always come back to the mystique and the tried and true of the No 1. I cannot recall how many times that I pulled one from a case at hunting camp or at the range when someone wants to strike up a conversation about the sleek lines, the classic beauty of a single shot or the caliber that I happen to be shooting that day (9.3s always seem to get an interest piqued). Also, there's the reflection of you, the hunter and shooter, that is projected as someone that is confident in their shooting abilities as well as the belief in the challenge of the hunt.

My two centavos...

Thanks for that
I've always liked them just never owned one before I've shot plenty though so looks like I'm gonna be keeping this one then

As a left hander I like single shot rifles. I've thought about getting a #1 more than once. I went to Namibia twice with a T/C Encore in 30-06. It took a total of eight animals without a issue with one shot. And honestly I'm so used to it, had I needed a second shot I can load it very fast and back to my eye. Practice a lot with it, you'll be just fine.

I have not hunted with one but sure do like them. Have owned quite a few but right now just 3, a .257 Roberts, 9.3x74R and a custom .404 Jeffery with Krieger barrel that shoots lights out.

Thanks for that yeah my mate shoots a TC over here if I do get one I would get plenty of practice in for sure just to make sure I had it right for a quick follow up shot if needed

I love the 9.3-74r not seen one in that calibers here in the UK I think that would be the one for me to go for as a sort of mid caliber one instead of the 416

You are going to love owning one!

Wayne,

I highly recommend the 9.3x74R for African game. I had amazing performance with mine on my recent hunt in Namibia and I'll have to say that I was pleasantly surprised as I had never used that caliber nor had I used that particular rifle on a hunt before. Needless to say, I love it and plan on customizing it to commemorate its blooding.

Now, you guys have got me looking to start the ball rolling on my next Africa hunt sooner than I had planned!
