Barnes vs GS Custom

Just wanted to add that I am in the process of setting up a 375 Ruger and the thing that surprised me was that after firing 3 shots in a row with the GS Custom 200gr HV that my barrel was only warm this was getting me a average speed of 3213.
Some 300gr round noses I picked up would be hot after 2 shots. So they definitely shoot a lot cooler.

I think I may try a few of the gcs 17 cal bullets and see what they do on animals bigger than ground squirrels. That should give an indication of how they will work with larger caliber rifles and big game but I can try them in the off season. I will have to email them to see if they ship to Canada.

I'm sitting in the woods with my son he is using 22-250 with 40gr GS custom I have a 375 Ruger with 200gr GS Custom I have seen 3 buck but non with a rack I can shoot and my son is being picky about what he shoots. So I guess I'll let you know if things change.

Some deadly combinations you have there. Good on you guys for letting the young ones go.

He is not too young 14 has been shooting deer since he was 8 has used 30-30, 7mm-08 30-06 now wanted to try his 22-250 Gina at GS Custom told me that that 40gr was up to the the job so I figured I'd give them a try and back him up with my rifle.

Speaking about letting the young bucks walk.

In Pennsylvania they have antler restrictions 3 points on 1 antler but under 16 can shoot if they have 1 spike 3" . His older brother got a 9 point almost 20" wide in archery season so he trying to hold out.

Probably shouldn't post photos with so much blood but that is only one taken before he caped it out. That is reason younger son is so picky today.

Please do let us know I would think that a 40 grain bullet in a 224 diameter gun would be quite a test for the bullet. A lot of people likely would not agree with me but my belief is deer rifles start at the 25-06. I live and hunt in open country that is really flat and you can see several miles in any direction so many shots are very long.

Where we hunt is mostly wooded with the exception of a few fields that may offer 300yards the 243 is common but I don't like the common bullets for that caliber I would never allow the 22-250 with cup&core bullets and when comparing Barns and GS Custom I liked faster speeds of GS Custom and the fact that they were used on plains game similar in size to white tails.
My problem is I can't get the white tails to cooperate.

Well second day in the woods was a bust. We sat in stand from sun up until 11:45 went for lunch got back to the stand and could see tracks in the mud that showed us that at least 8 deer went threw while we were gone one that left a very large track. That's hunting I guess I wish these deer understood I'm trying to test bullets/ cartridges. Well I'm back to work until Friday so I suppose there will be an endless parade of deer past my stand today Saturday I will be able to take a doe so I my have to shoot one for bullet test. I guess bullets can't tell if there is antlers or not.

Friday came and went no antlers showed up for us so today opens the antlerless season my son won best of 3 rock, paper, scissors so he got first shot with his 22-250 and it was a shot of 180 yards the deer jumped at the shoot then went 50 yards and tipped over.when we get to skinning shed I'll give better information on shot and bullet performance of 40gr HV

I think that GS Custom 40gr HV will bo the job it went in behind front shoulder came out in front of back leg at 170 -180 yards deer went about 50 and piled up bullet went threw about 18-20 inches of deer and kept going.
Looking good so far.

On the wound on the deer the bullet took out two ribs on entrance shed pedals put a 2inch hole through lung with 3 1" slashes around it. Not much of a blood trail because the intestines plugged exit wound that was around .75" but made jello of every thing between. It's only 1 test but so far it's looking like GS Custom has it right.

I have only used Nosler bullets in my rifles though I have been very interested in the Barnes bullets and how they perform.

I ran across GS Custom quite a few years ago long before they came to the USA. The two aspects about their bullets that have interested me the most is their GS CUSTOM FN - THE ULTIMATE SOLID. I have always toyed with the idea of the use of the FN in a cartridge like the .45-70 or the .450 Marlin against bears as a defense round. A blunt nosed "expanding" solid would seem to have great potential as a defense round against the great bears like in Alaska where you want deep penetration and smashing of large heavy bone along the way in rounds such as the .45-70 and .450 Marlin or the .444 Marlin. I also wondered in the case of the .444 Marlin FN if it could be adapted for use in the .44 Magnum handgun for Grizzly and Brown Bear defense.

it will be interesting to see more results. kind of like Bergers without the lead contamination

I'm a huge fan of GS Custom. They're particularly good when you're hunting heavy game with a calibre that would be considered too light because of the ectra penetration. Like Marius I use the 200 gr out of a .375 and can believe it would be very effective on buffalo. The high velocity more than makes up for the lighter bullet. Only thing is for precision shooting you need to confirm the impact points at different distances. They shoot differently than normal ammo and the rate of twist on your barrel is important. I can't hit a barn door using them in my .270 but super accurate in all my other rifles.

What is the difference you have in countered I have a 22-250 sighted 2" high at a 100 yards with 40gr hv and my sons have taken deer at 220 no problem.
