Hey yall headed to South Africa on my first safari hunt this August. I havent really hunted since I was 16 (about 30 yrs ago) so Im looking for any tips and pointers. I have been to the horn quite a few times but suppose its different climate wise and, for sure, peoples attitudes for lack of a better term.
So enlighten me Bwanas

A list of what animals you'll be pursuing would be beneficial. But a few initial tips:

1. Practice your shooting early and often, especially if you've not been shooting in quite sometime.
2. Once you have the load you're certain you'll be using and sighted in on the bench, move your practice to using shooting sticks. You can buy a pair like BogPod offers or make you're own.
3. Laundry is done daily, so you need not go and buy a bunch of clothes. You need 2 sets of hunting clothes minimum and in my opinion 3 maximum. The 3rd set for a just in case scenario. Outside of a good pair of boots, you don't need a bunch of expensive clothes. So spend money on a decent pair of boots only. Even the boots don't need to be really high end.
4. If you've not made your travel plans, keep checking the travel websites for deals as you never know when they'll occur. You're within the window of being able to book your flights now.
5. Enjoy the planning, don't let it be a burden. While traveling for a hunt has its steps, it's not that difficult either.
6. Continue being active on AH and ask any and all questions. We're a pretty friendly lot around here and are very willing to help. So beginner questions are quite welcome.

That's it for now, being called to breakfast.

All that I would like to add, is that I have nothing to add.

Congrats on your first safari! Check the site often, lots of knowledgeable hunters and outfitters here!

I must confess to being a tad excited about the trip so got me some new boots. Been wearing them to break em in. As for hunting clothes I dont have any so I will have to invest in a few.
I actually made a 375 H&H before I found out about the trip so I kind of lucked out there. Ive been shooting it quite a bit experimenting with different bullets and such.

If you're after plains game only, I'd recommend 250-270gr projectiles. If you're after buff or any other dangerous game, then I'm inclined to go with the 300gr versions. The heavy 300gr will certainly work on plains game too if you just want one load.

For hunting clothes you may want some of the pants with the zip off lowers to make long pants into shorts. Short or long sleeve shirts will be fine as you can always roll up the long sleeves if it's getting warm. A fleece jacket for the early morning chill and you should be good.

Ah your first safari, what a great feeling it is. I should know as I made my first safari only a little more then a year ago. Enjoy it all! Phil gave you great advise. Shoot shoot and shoot some more. Check out tag safari clothing they make a great zip off pants. Make sure to ask as many questions as you can here. We are all happy to help. Look forward to your report and photos.

DONT USE INTERLOCKS! They are junk for African game. Have fun. Start saving for trip #2

@flemgunner cruise around the site and read some of the threads. The are a lot of good outfitters on here and several people that will be more than willing to help you. Good advice already given in this thread. Don't worry so much about clothes. Jeans and a couple of camo shirts will serve you well.
Ask questions as you dig in and plan for your safari and I'm sure someone will help you with answers.

Congrats on setting up your adventure! Once your rifle is zeroed in, start shooting of off shooting sticks. You should be able to hit a paper plate sized target at 150 yards consistently. If you can get some photographic targets of Africa species they will greatly improve your shooting (and add to your building excitement).

As for clothing, etc., you search this forum, there's a huge amount of great information available.

More generally, use premium bullets of whatever brand for your African trip.

A comfortable binocular around your shoulders helps make the trip more enjoyable. It's nice to see what your PH is looking at in the distance. Sometimes they are wonderful for see things up close in the brush too!

As many have said, shoot shoot and shoot some more- off sticks. For about 6 months prior to my safari, I'd fire at least 40 rounds off sticks each time I went to the range. At the range, I was mostly shooting 100, 150, 200, and 400m targets- in Africa, most shots were 100 or less (depends on where you're hunting)

Regarding hunting clothes, I found that we really didn't need to invest in anything fancy. We each had a kryptek jacket as an outer layer, sweatshirt or vest for insulating layer, and carhardt pants and shirts (durable pants are key for all the thorns and stickers).

Best of luck- you've come to the right place. I did all my planning and prep based off advise from this forum!

Hi EGS

I read your thread with interest. Would you mind sending me that PDF? May I put it on my website?
