You guys have been great on the 404 Jeff and optics! I wonder if you could take off 2 1/2 inches off a ported 27 inch double barrel in 375 H&H and not screw up regulation?

I'm no expert, i think Cal Pappas may be the man for the question but;

It's possible, but I would think unlikely. Shorter barrels will change the balance, never mind any variations from muzzle inconsistencies. Those alone will most likely produce accuracy that is high and probably apart.

Having said that, since it may need regulation, the additional mass may be able to be added another way. Whether that is sufficient is a whole other question.

27" double 375 with ported barrels?? thats a first for me.
Do you have a pic, would be interested to see this.

I'd guess if you chop some barrel off you'll be do some follow up work. Can't imagine how you could not really.

Where is tarnation did you find a ported double rifle?

what a strange rifle... please post pictures.

Matt, It seems that the gunmakers in Ferlach Germany do this. There is a 470 NE on Morris Hallowell's website made by Johan Fanzoj, and the one I was speaking of was made by Ludwig Barovnik also from Ferlach. They have 4 circular ports on the side and 4 on top. I have had Morris's 470 in hand, it is a solid and well made piece with really nice wood. http://www.hallowellco.com/johan_fanzoj 470NE.htm

thats a nice looking rifle till you get to the muzzle... the porting and fiber optic sight look pretty out of place. with the ports on the side, i certainly wouldn't want to be next to someone touching that puppy off!

Very interesting, thats a first for me.
Not my kind of thing, it doesnt look like it fits right on a rifle such as that.
The porting and fibre optic certainly looks out of place on a rifle like that in my opinion.

Doesn't look super great, but I would learn to live with it rather than go chopping the barrels.

What I would do is change the front sight to a nice ivory bead.

with 27 inch barrels taking 3 inches off isnt going to ruin it. 24 inch will make it correct...:A Stirring: wheres MR @Velo Dog :E Big Grin:

A gunmaker with true double gun skills could shorten that rifle. I can think of exactly two in this country with whom I would trust that work. HOWEVER, the ribs would have to be relaid. the sights repositioned and alligned, and the rifle would have to be re-regulated. That will be a very, very expensive project. I assume we are not talking about a Holland& Holland Royal, so you need to do the math to see if the resulting investment - acquisition plus alteration - is within the resulting value of the rifle.

true....or he could get a hack saw and one of those dremmel things ....and sorted a la certain sabatti doubles......

.... and a soldering iron to fill in all those ugly gaps around the rib face. What could go wrong?

Easy fix, Just tap the holes, run some screws in there, a little blue loctite, bit of filing on the outside, run a nice brake cylinder hone on the inside to smooth things up, a dab or cold blue and all is good:eek:

That is the first ported double I have ever seen and hope it is the last.

Might try sending back to the manufacture for support and an estimate on costs. Or it would probably be cheaper to just have a new set of barrels made? or using the current barrels as a donor mono block?

Do you guys offer advice on medical issues too?
