Hello fellow hunters, I'm headed to Kuche Safari's October 8th on a bowhunt for Wildebeest, Impala and warthog, maybe Kudu.
I heard the bones in these animals are thicker then in a whitetail buck.
I'm hunting with my Mathews Halon 6 @ 71 pounds and my arrow weight is 400 grains.
I'm getting great penetration on deer, a pass through with no problem.
I even have some slick trick magnum broad heads for a back for kudu if necessary.
Do you think I have enough grain weight?
Any input would be appreciated.

Seems most people here from what I have seen in the past like fixed blades like German kinetics, but im sure someone with deeper knowledge than my deer shooting with a bow will be around shortly. Welcome to AH.

Welcome to AH!

There are some proficient bowhunters on this site, I am not one of them. Hopefully a few of them will see this question

By the way best of luck and have a great trip!

If you hunt from a blind, shoot distances are not long (less than 25 m) so I think is wiser to use a good fixed blade broadhead.
For me, your arrow weight is a little on the light side por kudu and wildebeest (i Think 460 and up is better)
Just my opinion, by the way I'm no expert
Good luck ! aim small-miss small :D

You should not have a problem. I personally like a bit heavier arrow. 450+ grains per inch total weight. The last outfit I hunted with don't shoot anything but Rages unless Giraffe, Buffalo, Hippo, etc.... Also, I hunted across the river from Kuche and Koos has a beautiful place! Have fun and send us a report! Ryan

use the slick tricks for everything and don't look back. Is your arrow 400 plus the broadhead? May total weight arrow and head is 485 and it worked very well this last trip on my nyala. I used just the standard 100 grain slick trick on Easton FMJ.

You failed to mention the length of your arrow ....... is 400 the spine or is this actually true weight of your arrows with broadhead ... a lot of archers confuse the two . ....... if so i'm calculating aprox. 5.6 grains per pound of draw weight ..... I think this is to light . Also if you plan on using Rage Mechanicals ....contact your PH and ask their opinion . When I went to Namibia I was asked to leave the mechanicals at home .

That's my total weight 400 grains. I did a gel test and it penetrated very well. 25" deep

My Arrow length is 28 1/8" I was told to shoot from a 400 to a 500 grain hunting arrow for plains game.

What arrow do you shoot? I myself would like a heavier arrow for over there. I think your stuff will work but I think heavier is better

I shoot the Carbon Express Maximum Hunter with weight technology. I will go heavier next year to a 500 grain because I want a Eland.
I was shooting the Maximum Red.

You should be fine but if eland is down the road for you I would start looking at the Easton fmj. easy arrow to get the weight you want and then a heavier fix blade head for sure for eland. Easy to get over 500 then

That is a dandy whitetail by the way in your picture.

Maximum Reds run 9.07 grains per inch for shaft .... so I recant my last statement about you being to light .... you are fine . Though I still think you would be better off running something in the 450 range ....this could be accomplished through the use of weight tubes or buying heavier shafts (FMJ).
