What the heck is a "hand carbine" in reference to importing a firearm in to SA?
I have always thought that lever actions were illegal to import in to SA for hunting but it doesn't say that on the SAPS website. It says "hand carbine", is that a lever action?
Here is the link:

I have taken a lever action gun twice and no issues.

Hmm well that's good to know. It's just that this site in the "hunting information by country" says that lever actions aren't allowed to be imported in to SA. Especially bizarre considering that they are legal to own there.

I love lever actions but don't want to get one and not be able to use it in Africa!

Check with your outfitter but I have taken my Marlin 45-70 model 1895 lever action to RSA twice.

They must surely be allowed.
We have guided many clients with them especially 45-70 they are real great rifles.

Should you need help contact http://riflepermits.com/

Well Jono that site doesn't say they aren't allowed either and your personal experience, as well as CAustin's, makes me think that it must be allowed.

Dare I say it, is the information on the forum out of date?

"Hand Carbine" = Uzi, Scorpion, etc.. Smallish semi and automatic hand held machine pistol.

Agree - Think when translating from English to Afrikaans or original to Afrikaans the meaning will differ from country or have a different meaning like Traffic light to Robot (Afrikaans) where Robot means mechanical man in other language

Makes sense to me and those two screenshots I posted don't say lever actions are illegal.
Jerome @AfricaHunting.com do you agree with this? Does the "South Africa Hunting Information" need updating or am I missing something?

Well the issue here is really with the phrase "hand carbines" and the translation or interpretation of it by the South African Police Service. There are many rules and regulations that leave open questions as to how wording can be interpreted and this is one of them. One agent will not even blink an eye and then another will not allow it. It is true however that over the years I have seen many lever action rifles in trophy pictures from South Africa.

I will not change or update the SOUTH AFRICA Hunting Information page at http://www.africahunting.com/threads/south-africa-hunting-information.14223/ until the information or regulation provided by the South African Police Service is re-written or further clarified.

Thanks for bringing this up but my opinion is to always error on the side of caution.

Definitely err on the side of caution mate.

I mainly tagged you because who else knows more about African hunting!

It is good to know that laws are just as vague in other countries as mine.
