Advice on first Dangerous Game rifle

And he was only only joking...

I disagree that a 9.3X62 is as good as a 375H&H. World of ballistic and hitting difference between them, however a 9.3X64 is very close to the 375H&H.

The 404 is only 1mm shorter than a Rigby, so when people say it will fit into a standard action they are either seating the bullet way into the case or have had work done to lengthen the mag box. Yes you do end up retaining more steel in the action and behind the locking lugs with a 404J.

I am a 416Rigby fan but if I could not have the Rigby it would be the 404J. I see the 416 Rigby as the 375 of the 400's. Load it with 340 grain bullets for reaching out on plains game. Even with a 400/410 pill you can still use them to 300mts without undue holdover.

I use 96grains of AR2209 behind 410 Woodleigh RNSP and the 400gr Hydrostatic. The RNSP exits the barrel at 2450fps and the Hydro at 2550 fps and both have the same point of impact. You will not go wrong with a 375 or 416R or 404J. just my 2 cents worth.

Hi Rule303.

I think you are right that there is some difference between 9.3x62 and 375H&H but if I was going to justify a new rifle it would be a bigger difference than that.

G'day Scrumbag,

Not disrespecting the 9.3X62, it has the runs on the board. I was just thinking 200fps more with same weight projectile was nothing to be sneezed at.

I do know where you are coming from and I would certainly use this as a reason to buy a 416 Rigby or 404Jeffrey. Notice I said reason and not excuss:LOL:

If only licensing in the UK was easier ;)

Amen to that!

I am guessing you won't be trying for expanding bullets on ticket?

Since you already have something close to the .375, I would say go with the .416 Rigby or Ruger, many who have these guns ae quite happy with them

Hi Jim,

Probably not. Maybe just to hold and not use. (Already have 9.3x62 with expanding without restrictions so a 40 might be pushing it. Fortunately can use at my club so that's OK)

What is your club authorised up to energy/velocity/calibre wise?

Jim, it's the British Sporting Rifle Club at Bisley. As long as you follow the High Muzzle Energy Procedure (basically RO bore sights before you shoot) you can pretty much shoot anything as long as it is not .338. We even shoot the "Ashes" match against the Aussies every year with big bores. (Hoping to shoot it myself in September)

If you like drop me a PM and I'll send you some info.

ATB,

Scrummy

Happy days then mate. Well since you don't have to worry about max energy down the range and since you aren't trying to justify it for uk quarry (like many do with 375) why not step up from a 416 or 423?
I'm not saying get a 585 Nyati but I'd be leaning towards a 458 (450 Rigby?) as I bloody love mine, maybe a 470 Capstick or 500 Jeffery just to up the ante.

Ps I appreciate the offer but my 45 is approved for UK quarry so I don't target shoot much except on my permissions.

That's my thought Jimbob. Have the 9.3x62 which is big enough but that is on an open cert with AOLQ so if they wanted to put a Jeff on there with the same I'd be happy but probably wouldn't be my first choice for munties...

The big Jeff, not the small one :)

Either would likely work on munty mind.

500 Jeff eh? I can feel my osteopath having a nice holiday already!

Hear in America at least. There's great deals to be had on DG rifles. Used racks in gun stores all across America have gem's just ripe for the picking. Alot of older generation of shooters have passed away and the younger tactical AR generation aren't interested in these guns, so they go for great prices. Plus younger people don't have the $ to buy the expensive ammo that goes in these rifles. If i didn't reload I wouldn't be able to afford to shoot my big bores. But I've scored some great finds over the past few years and at 35 years old I'll be enjoying these rifles for years to come

If you can't get quarry for it on your FAC then you shouldn't (according to home office guidance) be allowed to buy expanding in the UK.

I guess it all depends on your local constabulary etc.

Yeah I have seen that too but, as you said, it just I varies so much from force to force it is ridiculous so it's worth an ask :)

I've always found having a chat before application helps. That way no one has an entrenched position.
