Hiya guys!
Here's a question for fellow bespectacled shooters

Which one do you prefer for hunting Africa.. Glasses or contacts? I'm quite torn on the subject myself....

Whatever you can see out of the best, which if you are like me is glasses.

Remember, you'll be looking for new (to you) and different animals. Every advantage should be taken when it comes to sight. the more quickly you can see an animal, the more quickly you can take a shot.

I have worn both while hunting, sadly contacts no longer work for me. If I had the choice, it would be contacts because of the peripheral vision, no constantly cleaning the dust off, slipping when sweaty. Make sure you practice shooting with whatever you decide, and probably will take both anyway, right? Have fun in Africa!

Thank you guys for your input.
I'm worried about the dust, mostly the sweat. And the fog accompanying. I obviously don't know if that will be a problem in the climate but.....

But with contacts I'm worried about them drying out. So I thought maybe contacts and a good set of eyedrops for contacts that I can drop in before leaving the truck?

Spitballing here...

I always carry eyedropper even with glasses. Not just in Africa, but everywhere.

And just throw in a microfiber cloth to clean the glasses. No different than any other outdoor activity. Well unless you're in the desert, but to ,y recollection you're going to the Cape.

Get one of these and attach to your binos. Then you will always have it for both glasses and binos. They are great.

From what I understand the climate there is pretty much dessert...
Even here in a Iceland (very low humidity) I have trouble with my contacts drying out

But it somehow feels more natural for me (?!) to shoot wearing contacs than in glasses... I feel like they don't work. Like they make a difference to my view...

You're really right. I grew up in fairly similar climate and terrain to the Cape and Karoo and don't think of it as desert, but it really is close and can certainly be dusty and dry.

Like @K-man said, just practice with whatever you plan on hunting with. Glasses are definitely an adjustment when looking through a scope, but before long you won't even notice they are on.

I have not had issues with contacts drying out more in Africa than at home. (Also pretty dry)
No issues: Botswana, Namibia, KZN, Moz, Karoo, etc.

Being tired and jet lagged played more on the dry eyes.

Bring them both along and be prepared to just use glasses if there are issues.

I like the contacts because you don't have to worry about glasses getting dirty.

If you are alright with contacts then by all means plan on wearing them but I would also get a few bottles of eye drops and a extra pair of them along with taking glasses as a just in case.

You just never know what might happen when you are in the middle of nowhere.

If you go with glasses buy yourself Croakies they will help keep your glasses in place

I wear glasses but frankly pull them off when ready to shoot! I keep them on a lanyard and have my scope set to compensate for gage vision in my right eye. This works best fir me.

I am horribly near sighted and wear contacts daily as opposed to my coke bottle glasses. I shoot at home in contacts so I shoot on safari in contacts. I have not had any more difficulty in Africa with them drying out than at home. But, I always take 1) an extra set, 2) my glasses as backup and 3) plenty of rewetting solution to keep them lubricated.

@The Blonde, I used to wear glasses, then contacts, and last year I invested in Lasik. I have to say that hunting has been much better without glasses or contacts. Shooting my bow or rifle was a real pain with glasses. Contacts were better, but not perfect. With the eye correction surgery, I have 20/15 in my left and 20/20 in my right. I'm glad I did it and don't know why I waited so long.

Wear whichever one you usually wear each day and hunt in. if you always wear your contacts or glasses hunting than stick with it, no need to throw your shooting and comfort off. Just keep spare contacts with you while out if you go that route.

Thank you guys for your input.

Sweat shouldn't be a problem. Dust, fogging and dry climate would be. The added bonus of some form of glasses is protection from thorns, branches and other objects

my 15 year old always shoots with his contacts in shotgun and rifle he had no trouble in the east cape wearing his daily contacts also helps with his peripheral vision and remember you will want sunglasses probably if you go contacts

I have to have glasses for distance vision, and at 63 am too old a dog to try to take up contacts. Ten years ago, I discovered Silhouette rimless glasses. They weigh nothing, the rimless design makes them the least problematic that I have found w/r to peripheral vision, and they are very simple to keep clean. They are also nearly indestructible Only negatives are cost, and the very lightness of the glasses makes them particularly easy to misplace (though, now that I think about it - that might have something to do with being 63 as well!)
