Drink of Choice in Africa

Windhoek Lager for me although Castle and Zambezi were adequate. My PH liked Bell's Scotch.

There's something very funny about Afrikaans lingo like the "spook and diesel" bit.

Made me think of another use of that term. When I was there last it was Zimbabwe Veterans day which has become multicultural. I believe its now formally called "Ancestors and Veterans Day". Naturally, the ever humorous Zimbabwe boys have another name for it: "Spooks and Gooks Day". Especially funny hearing that when the people telling you the name were technically both the spooks and the gooks respectively. Very irreverent.

among other cold ones i like simba from DRC, it sometimes comes over the border.....the fact it is in 730ml bottles helps :E Big Grin:

I have been 5 times in South Africa (4 months together)'and once in Kenya. Kenya is easy, thats Tusker beer!

Since i have lived with average south africans everytime. Which i proudly now call my second family:) i have tried most types of drinks. Worst is Witblietz, tastes like shit and the babalas is from another world.

For me klippies and coke and castle is bread and butter:) also one shot is a must, Springbuck. Mix between amarula "classic" and creme de mente. Not strong, quite smooth:)

If you want the finer things, food and cuisine in RSA is workd class. Cape Town and the wine districts are amazing, both quality and wine. I can't imagine going to CT without visiting La Colombe in Constantia. Amazing food and wine. Once scored the 10th best restaurant in the world. Beautiful place. They also have the best dessert wine in the world. Vin de Constance, Napoleons favourite:)

Wish i was going soon, miss the smells, people and nature:)

I am a G/T man in best british fashion......only Gordons Dry does it in the african heat...
Else it is namibian beer for me ...I struggle with Castle....taste like lion piss to me...:D Drunk:

Some south african red wines are nice....:D Beer Bottle:

Ponodoro Your the first person I have seen to tell everybody that they drank Lion piss.Ha.John

Waterdog...what can I do when its 38 degrees centigrade and all the PH offers is Castle...then you drink to survive...:D Cool Drink:

No offence...but Castle does not taste me..

Ah yes, Amarula....how could I leave that off the list.

On our very first trip to Namibia, our PH said he had a tradition when you killed your first kudu that you had to drink some schnapps from this tiny metal gas can that he had and then eat some raw liver from the kudu. I'm not certain if he was just testing to see how gullible Canadians were but we did it and he partook as well!

On our most recent trip to the Eastern Cape with Lalapa Safaris, Ray offered us a drink when we first arrived and Vanessa of course ordered a brandy and Coke Zero. Ray looked a bit shocked and then stated that he was proud to have any woman hunter in his camp that drank brandy and coke.

To me it is herecy to mix GOOD brandy with coke.....but if it is Klipdrift or the like...well...you have my sympathy...

@Red Leg , we going to have to have a serious debate about Manica!! MM is the pride of Moz. But I will take a Manica any day over a MM. View attachment 153086
LOL. Trust me. I AM NOT downloading that picture! Been trying to get the vision of that monkey urine out of my head for the better part of two years (sigh, and steeling myself for next year).

We did have a little diesel-powered frige in camp which made ice cubes - Brought along a bottle of Talisker which helped forget the beer.

Amaural is not bad but frankly I'm a bourbon man! They have bourbon in RSA!

In Namibia-
Tafel beer. Better cover it at night, sometimes you get drinking buddies.

And had I known about it when we arrived in Windhoek, not leaving: Gemmersbier, the locally made ginger beer, which woulda mixed really well with whiskey or rum I bet.

Windhoek, Castle, or SA red wines for me

for beer mossi for sure, if not castle lite, in stubbies
if fishing , bloody marrys for breakfast, boat rules
G&Ts for sundowners
asara or fat bastard, cab sav with dinner, and while afterwards
jasmmisons and water is always good
armarula on ice is another favourite

wow how favourite drinks change , a year ago I only drank beer and bourbon

Bombay Sapphire Gin with tonic, ice and slice of lime - there is no better hot weather adult beverage - IMO.

Up here in the far north, where we enjoy a colder climate, I prefer somewhat stronger flavored beers.
But, in Africa's much warmer weather, Windhoek Lager served just above freezing is pretty tasty.

As South African red wine goes, "Rubicon" is no Duckhorn Cabernet from Napa Valley but, Rubicon is pretty decent.
It is at it's best when served with grilled/roasted game or domestic sheep (aka "lamb" as that is it's marketing name here in the USA).

:A Ill:No hard liquor for me, in my more stupid days of old I dang near killed myself on McNaughton's whiskey one day, took me a week to recover!:A Ill: Do love good lager though. Don't care too much for Castle, have had the Windhoek which is good stuff and Zambezi Lager in Zim that I like. Tusker of course. Truthfully though the beer I have liked the best while in Africa is not African but Dutch, Amstel Lager. Cant get it in the states and last time I had it in RSA in '14 it tasted just like Heinekens, which makes sense I guess as I believe it sold out to them. Disappointed. Now Amarula, that is special sipping sweetness.
