River guide gun in .416 ruger

I own a 416 Ruger Alaskan , they are great rifles , but I am sure @CAustin will be along soon .

He will give you great advice .

New? $950-$1,000 (out the door)

Used? $650+ (it all depends upon the seller)

I agree with CTDolan on pricing. It's a great rifle from the time you take it out of the box! Get one and go hunting.

The only issue I've had is shown here (which I'm not worried about as it's superficial, merely the tang relieving itself, a sufficient margin having not been left at the factory).

In other words, the crack goes nowhere near into the hand of the stock and, the tang now relieved, it has done all it is going to do.

@CTDolan Had you checked the tightness of that angled screw that pulls the action into the stock?

I bought an RSM at a greatly reduced price because of the same little crack.. The screws were loose.

I took it all apart and cleaned it and carefully removed a bit of that wood so it did not touch any longer. Glued the cracks from all angles and after it dried I scraped the excess off. Now I feel real good about it. Shot it some at the range and it seems fine. It is a 416 Rigby. I'd be really unhappy if that happened to my 505!

If you bought that gun new, the crack probable takes away considerable re-sale value. I would call Ruger to see if they would warranty it.

Thanks for the reply. I'll check the torque on the front angled screw (as I recall, it's supposed to be 90-some inch-lbs).

As for warranty, no doubt Ruger would, but I feel confident sorting the matter myself.

I think your right on the torque. Bet Ruger might surprise you if you wee inclined to push it?

these 416 Rugers really surprised me , I never intended purchasing one but there was one at a dealer that I kept picking up and looking at every time I went there . It was an Alaskan model .

Eventually I bought the rifle , and I really like the rifle now.

CT your picture shows exactly what I experienced after my elephant hunt last year. I thought it was something I had done. Took it to a gunsmith and he fixed it and you can't tell that anything ever happened! I've probably put a little over 200 rounds down the barrel when the same type chip appeared!

I'll probably pull the action and repair the chip as well. It'll be a simple matter to glue it down with an appropriate clamp.

I love shooting the 416 Ruger. I've wanted one ever since the cartridge hit the market. In a bolt action, stainless steel, with a 20 inch barrel, it's perfection.

Then you and I are in complete agreement sir! It does the job intended!

I had the same crack in my 375 Ruger Guide Gun. Sent it to Ruger and they replaced stock. Shot another 50 round and crack started to appear again. Had my local gunsmith relieved would around tang area, he drilled angle holes in tang area from action side and filled with glass bedding compound. Then he glass bed the action. Shot about another 100 round and it hasn't been a problem so far.

I'm about to get a .375, would you say it's worth relieving that area from the start?

Yes, I would relieve wood around tang area, free float barrel and glass bed action. It will not crack and will shoot accurately. I had my trigger sear and bolt rails honed. Bolt slides freely in action like butter and trigger breaks smoothly with no creep. I get 1/2" groups with my 300gr. Accubond load and under an 1" with my Woodleigh 350gr. PP load in my 375 Ruger.
