I want to start by saying that i know this is QuickLoad so its all estimates.

That been said, going by that program, whilst keeping it within CIP pressure specs a couple of the older cartridges can be loaded much faster. Now factory ammo will stick to the old velocities since it has to regulate in older rifles but why aren't new doubles built to regulate with modern loads, or are they?

Couple of examples of what QuickLoad predicts, all velocities rounded to the nearest multiple of 25:
450 NE 3.5"- 500gr@2325fps 26" barrel/500gr@2275fps 24" barrel
450 No2 Jeffery- 500gr@2425fps 26" barrel/500gr@2375fps 24" barrel

Those are 458 Lott to 450 Rigby velocities! Admittedly the 26" barrel is a little long but not particularly so for a double rifle.

Modern doubles are still regulated to the same basic ballistics as they were 100 years ago.

Side by side doubles in general are not the strongest type of actions available and are not designed for excessive pressure.

That's the thing. Those are at CIP pressures so the doubles made today in those chamberings (or sent for full nitro proof) are built to take that.

i own a 450 N.E 3 1/4 Inch in a double and i just love it. The Rifle was regulated with a 480 gr projectile doing 2150fps but i am producing my best groups at 2200 fps with the 480gr and with the 500gr my best group is at 2100fps. i have loaded the 480gr all the way up to 2300 fps with no signs of pressure but it does kick allot more at that speed. Anyway you dont really need more than a 500gr projectile traveling at 2000fps

I completely agree, it's not needed.

I just thought it odd that if it could be loaded quicker, and it can going by your experience, why isn't it an option for new doubles?

I guess with a truely custom rifle you could. Just seems that 458 Lott power in a double would be a good option for some.

A 480gr@2300fps would sure kick mate!

I am having a Butch Searcy Classic double rifle in 450 NE 3 1/4 in. It will have 25 in. barrels. Butch is going to regulate the rifle with 500 grain North Fork flat point solids (for better S.D. and penetration) at around 2150 fps. I asked the same question of him, when we spoke, about increasing the velocity to 2200-2300 fps, and he said he could but why.......He had the same opinion as you Petrus regarding the 500 grain bullets at 2000 fps.

He's also going to give me data on light practice loads with cast lead bullets.

I cannot wait to get it and start practicing with it.

That'll be a keeper that mate.

I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking about the potential available.
I agree with Butch, you definitely don't need more than the standard loading like.
If I got one it'd be regulated for a faster load for no other reason than I could
