Gentlemen,

A question for the group on the Whitworth Mark X 98 series. I'm considering an as new, probably unfired .458 with all the "Express" style goodies.....
What is really turning me off (especially as a possible DG rrifle), is the small flat metal slide safety.

It's the 2 position style, which is fine, but it's small flat thin and the grooves are not aggressive. I must have pushed it back and forth 50 times while handling it, but in my mind I'm thinking it would be VERY easy to miss under pressure.

I'm sure I could have an aggressive tab welded to the pad to make it more sure, but just curious if there's a "fix" out there that I would be interested in?

The Ruger 1 that I have in 458 Lott has a flat safety like what you are describing and I've not found it to be a problem!

The triggers can be decent on those Whitworths. I have had two of them and both triggers were fine with a little work by my smith. The other popular option is to replace the safety with the Model 70 style 3 position safety, also readily available for the M98 Mauser from Midway or Brownells.

Thanks so much Custom,
I actually passed on that rifle since I found a crack in the wrist. I am on the lookout for another, they seem to pop up frequently.

I can recommend zastava rifles. I have customized mine and now shoots .5 moa. If you just take a little time with these rifles, you will rewarded.

Boyds thumbhole stock, which was semi-inletted, free floated the barrel and tight fitted the receiver.

Bedded a one piece picatinny base.

Worked the bolt until silky smooth.

Trigger was acceptable from factory.

Worked up a load that works.

30-06 180 grain hornady interlock

federal casing

cci large rifle primer

Could check out stockys stocks. They have a huge assortment of replacement and factory overrun stocks. I think the owner is a member of this forum. I'm sure he would hook you up. Just tell the guy to come down on the price because of the crack. Replace it with the stock of choice. www.stockysstocks.com

Just checked, he is a member. His handle is Stocky, drop him a PM.

61..........I have a Whitworth Exp in 375, and while it was basically a good gun, It needed a little refinement. Had 3 position Mod 70 wing safety put on, a little lapping and truing, other metal work, and it is now a fine looking rifle. The most expense was cutting off that awful swept wing bolt, and putting on a straight Rigby style bolt and barrel band swivel. these changes keep both hands from being barked by recoil, but the bolt change necessitated a stock change..........still, for the price, a nice controlled round feed rifle with leaf sights................Mine required re crowning of the barrel, as this was so bad from the factory, that it would not group well.............................best of luck............................FWB
