Hello All

Planning a buffalo hunt with my PH. Can anyone explain the difference from northern and southern Moz. I have only hunted Plains game in SA with him and have never been to Moz. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Matt

Zambezi Delta vs Niassa, not even the same planet really.

Brickburn pretty much sums it up. I have hunted the Delta and am going booked to go back in '17. Delta itself is a vast saw grass floodplain teaming with buffalo - and a bitch to hunt. Typical bordering areas have sable, nyala, hartebeest, and the little guys.

Have not hunted there myself, but have a friend that PH/ Outfits there in Niassa... VERY tough country and lots of walking... personally, I would prefer the rough hilly terrain of the Niassa compared to the swamps of the delta... my own personal opinion.
Moz also has an excellent area just across the Zim border.. opposite the Gonarezhou park.. would hunt there next year, but the Govt fees put me off, so going back to the Zim side of this area... NO Govt fees, per se!!

I would not hunt a buffalo in the delta.
A buff must be tracked down in the sand and and not shot by water walking ( I'm a worst swimmer :( )
Only my opinion.

Foxi,
AGREE 100%.. I am born and raised in Africa and have a HUGE respect for African water... ANY water ( unless in a swimming pool :) ).. crocodiles gather in African water... snakes in the swamps... sharks in the salt water..:sick:

Also, as a FIRTS EVER buff hunt, I would advise to stay away from the Delta swamps...it is NOT easy going and will very tiresome, you will have thick reeds to contend with = minimum visibility etc.
Go for the dry open areas first,is my advice.

Bruce.

Where would you recommend for first time buff hunt? I also have option to hunt them in SA but have heard some negative things about that.

I have hunted buff in Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe and RSA.... I would give some serious thoughts to hunting in Zim, but this also depends IF and WHAT you might want to hunt along with the buff??
Tale Aim Safaris, based in Johannesburg, operate in RSA, Zim, Moz and I can recommend them for a reliable and successful buff hunt in the S-E corner of Zim. You will do the typical buff hunt, where you pick up tracks, debus and then follow on foot. Large herds offer a great selection for trophy size etc.
Relatively easy to get to.. fly in to Harare on international flight and then either get met and picked up by the PH and drive down to the concession ( +- 8hrs drive) or charter on small Cessna down to Buffalo range or Mabalauta ( I charter down to either, depending where I am starting the hunt).
Zambia is also a great option... MASSIVE herds still around in the Luangwa valley areas and it is not uncommon for herds of 1000 + buff!!
If you need more info etc please contact me by PM or on brusonn@hotmail.com

Egan36 there are great free range buffs available near Kruger in South Africa. Contact Pieter at Paw Print Safaris....he can help you. I agree with what others have said. Maybe your first hunt should be somewhere other than the swamps!

2 x buff taken in the Chiredzi area described above in June this year... my first born son's first buff and one that I hunted as well.

The rest of y'all can call me crazy, but this sounds like it would be a blast! Not easy mind you, but what fun!

I'm also weird in that I actually enjoy seeing snakes. :)
