This is my first post on AH after a long time of snooping around and researching for my first African hunt. The question I had is a little vague, but here I go. I was wondering how much the overall cost of a plains game hunt costs (plane tickets, hunt, shipping, taxidermy, etc). I am looking at hunting Kudu, Impala, Warthog, Springbok, and possibly a gemsbok in South Africa. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Ok HTXHunter! There are several outfitters on here who can give you quotes. Just ask them from their websites. I suspect some will respond to your post.
I suggest Paw Print Safaris. Go to the website and ask Pieter to give you a quote. Airline tickets......well where are you flying from. Do you want to hunt in South Africa where Paw Prints is located or do you want to go to another country? Just go on Delta and plug in dates! Do you want business class or coach .......you will see how much the tickets are.

By the way welcome to AH! Ask all the questions you want. Plenty of folks here willing to help.

Depending on the outfitter you pick is going to depend on what you spend.

My safari this last May was about $12,000 over what the outfitter charged me and that was everything from using a service for my firearm permits into South Africa, air fair, tips, 8 days of touring, to my final taxidermy fees here in the states.

many factors can change the price. But here is a basic run down for what you ask for on say a 7 day hunt. airfare during prime month 2200 off month 1500. your animals with gemsbuck and say 7 days hunting around 6000.00. Dip /pack just ship hides/horns back to states 1800 to 2000. Mount trophys here in states all shoulder mounts about 4000.00. Mount and ship mounted trophys back from SA about 5000.00.

You have ask a very broad question but that is a rough break down on what I would say your looking out. I can help you more if you want to get serious about putting a hunt together with paw print. welcome to the site

Not bad billc.
That is a good ball park.

Now you can add all the other stuff you will think you HAVE to buy to go there.
medical insurance
vacs
new rifle
new bullets,, lots used at shooting range before you go.
New sticks for shooting practice
new cloths
new boots
new gun case
rifle permit
cameras
voltage converters
The five extra animals you will shoot that you never thought you would.

Not really a vague question, everyone has to start somewhere in planning their first trip. First timers often do well with the package hunts that offer good deals, so be on the look out for those. I think other replies in the thread have helped you get a rough idea on the animals and taxidermy. One thing to also take note of on airline tickets is that if your trip originates on or before May 31, your flights will be considerably cheaper typically. Fares go up after that for the summer season and then come back down sometime in mid or late August if I'm not mistaken. A little time on travel websites will show this.

By your AH name, I'm thinking you may be from Texas. If so, and you're within reasonable distance of Dallas, I'd highly recommend you attend the DSC convention in January. You can meet with many outfitters that way and get a better idea of what it will run you.

You do not get stupid questions ,ask as many you need , going to a different country is without knowledge on what to expect can cause disappointment if you did not work out your budget to do all the stuff you want

This is a great forum to start your African safari

Good luck on your planing

well as you can see the extra can add up like brickburn showed if you have no control.

It can be a trip that cost more but planned out well and you stick to a budget it can be figured out to within a few hundred dollars. You can hunt with all the same cloth and hunting stuff you use now and use for a plains games hunt.

Ask questions and do research pick your dates and have a blast.

..........

Exactly.

Welcome to AH, and have fun with your planning !

This clearly suggests that Brickburn has no control . . .heck, it actually says that!

Another one in my club!(y)

Yeah, I went overboard buying clothes, and gave 1/2 of it away when I was there. If you hunt deer, you have the clothes to hunt plains game. I also heard a rumor on this forum that African animals can't see pink.

Definitly get shooting sticks for practice, it will definitely be worth it.

Definitely do the rifle permit, it makes life 100x easier. And it is not that expensive.

Taxidermy can vary greatly. But it is worth it to shop around and make sure you life the quality. Dennis is one of the best. There are cheaper options in South Africa but I think it might be 20% less, not sure if that is worth it to you.

I think the importer and shipper are the biggest unknowns, some charge more than others and I have not used enough to know the best way to navigate this.

Do not use cardboard boxes for shipping, and if you dip/pack or taxidermist tells you so, do not believe them and find another one.

Also, take an extra couple grand, there will be animals that you are gonna want to shoot, it just happens.

Good luck and be sure to let us know who you choose!!! Look forward to hearing the details.

The five extra animals you will shoot that you never thought you would.

This is the hidden cost no one likes to talk about. :E Big Grin:

And welcome to the forum!!!

Really shop your airfare and watch prices. I was going to fly Delta or SAA, because it is the quickest and most hassle-free, but the airfare from British Airways was HALF the price (coming from Los Angeles). I saved $2,000 for 2 people and it only added another 3 hours to the total trip time. The prices seemed to fluctuate week by week, and I bought when I thought the time was right. Also, watch travel agents; a couple were recommended to me and their rates were higher than booking on Expedia!

Airfares are super cheap right now! you can do a nice hunt in SA in April of 2016 with roundtrip airfare for around $900!

I would second most of the good information that you have already received. I too was able to save about $1000/ticket by going the British Airways route and it was more convenient on times. If the H in HTX stands for Houston, you can go to the Houston Safari Cub meting - http://www.houstonsafariclub.org/convention/ - in Houston to wet your appetite before going to Dallas for the Dallas Safari Club or Las Vegas for the Safari Club International Convention (I haven't made that one yet, but will some day :)!).

I would recommend that you skim through the safari planning guide - http://www.africahunting.com/community/safari-planning-guide/ … especially the TIPPING GUIDE - http://www.africahunting.com/threads/tipping-guide.183/ … there are answers to questions that you haven’t even thought about yet!

thanks for all of the responses. Yes Scott Slough, I am from Houston and will be attending the Houston safari club show in January. I appreciate all the good info. my reason for asking this is because I'd like to save a majority of the cost up before I set it in stone.

will any of y'all be going to the Houston safari club show? it would be nice to meet some of y'all

HTXHunter,

Attached is a spreadsheet I've used to estimate total cost. For me, that includes my taxidermy and misc gifts we tend to buy. I used this format to estimate Ann's and my trip to New Zealand this past April and it ended up being within 5% of actual.

You'll need to talk to the PH's and Outfitters on the site about taxes, etc. for a specific country you want to visit.

Hope this helps.

John

I do believe @Buff-Buster will be there. There will be lots of AH'ers at DSC if you can make it up for the weekend.

Hey D Dog, Who's that 900$ flight with and from which airport. Sept. next year is running around 1400 from Seattle on Delta via Atlanta.
