help me choose some Plains Game

I am a big fan of hunting animals endemic or originally native to the area. So hunting nyala in the Cape or gemsbok in the lowveld or Natal doesn't really appeal. But that may just be my issue:)

If you look at the indigenous animal distribution maps, you'll see that Nyala was already present in the top edge of the Eastern Cape province where it borders Natal. I guess the spread of the species across the entire province was aided by man, but who know how far South they would have moved by now.
I do understand the point that you are trying to make though.

Whatever nice trophy crosses your path !

Shoot anything & everything that you feel tempted to. You won't regret shooting it, you will only regret not shooting it once you are back home!!!!

Eland, Kudu, Gemsbok, Roan and Sable. All freely available and make great trophies. Just dependent on your budget.

plenty of very good ideas... my train of thought at the moment is maybe:

1. baboon
2. warthog
3. hyena
4. kudu
5. eland
6. hartebeest
7. (what ever Africa gives me)

Spiral horns will get you every time.

Certainly consider that Honey Badger if you are hunting Hyena. They may just come in to the same bait. Be ready.

Another approach to this could be to take a thick wallet and shoot until you can sit comfortably again.:D

:W Sharp Shooter::P Elmer Fudd:
as my father says when it comes to feral hog hunting "kill em all...and let god sort em out"

Matt i think go with an open mind. Sometimes Africa just gives you the opportunity at a great trophy and if you don't take it you will most probably regret it.
See what presents itself.
Whole lot of truth in the above.

Kudu, Gemsbock, Mountain Zebra, Wart Hog

Indeed they will. They got me bad enough that a Bushbuck and Eland are at the top of my hit list for the next trip.

Bushbuck by far the most enjoyable experience . Can be a tough animal. But fun enough I will be trying for another in April. Eland was also a fun one.

I think eland, bushbuck, black wildebeest and zebra....along with anything else that you fancy.

Personally I think gemsbok and red hartebeest just scream Namibia and the desert. Then you can chase those mountain zebra too.

I was torn between a good blue wildebeest or a black wildebeest until my PH showed me a trophy black wildebeest and then it was all over until I found him again a few days later. If you do shoot one don't forget to get the tail made up, a very unique trophy.

Matt First do you have a budget laid out for the trip? That will kinda help folks channel the suggestions. So I will approach it from small, med, and big $$$$
Small $ Impala, common diker, blesbok, red heartebeest
Med$ Spiral slam eland,kudu, nayala,bushbuck
Med$ #2 Tessebe, black wildebeest, blue wildebeest, gemsbuck
Med#3 mountain reedbuck, common reedbuck, steenbuck, klipspringer,, bushpig, warthog
Big$$$ Sable, Roan, Giraffe, waterbuck, jackall
Big$$$#2 Lioness, caracal, civet, genet, serval, honey badger, hyena,
Really big $$$ leopard, male lion, hippo
Mondo Huge$$$ all of the above

Matt you gotta go after black wildebeest and red hartebeast to have the black, blue, and red beest slam! Besides, they match all the color phases of your shoulder will be once you get the 585 HE beast home to slam you ;)

@matt85,

If you want both a great Black and Blue Wildebeest, I know where you can find them.......

and after seeing Bob's post, a Red Hartebeest too.

Black wildebeest! Best animal ever, and completly nuts. They kept running from left to right, in my direction, away from me, I was just sitting there not knowing what is acutally happening. Then came the right moment and I took this one - was a thrilling hunt!

Other great hunt was the Eland bull, because it was raining as hell the hole day, it was foggy and cold and finally I got this nice one.

Id say go for what opportunities arise but..... My favorite pg are kudu, nyala, bushbuck, gemsbok, black wildebeest, hartebeest, and springbuck. Good luck and I feel your pain as in all honesty I want one of everything in Africa.

Like Gizmo I want one of everything! But you can't go wrong with a Kudu. The kudu is just a majestic beast. It's meat has a distinct taste and can be prepared in many different ways. They are a lot of fun to hunt as well.

I would say Kudu, Bushbuck, Hartbeast. Those are all fun, and the hartbeast has such a unique look!
