The common warthog (Phacochoerus africanus) has been hunted in the following African countries: Ethiopia, South Africa, Namibia, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana, C.A.R, Mozambique, Sudan, Kenya, Uganda, Cameroon, Chad, Mauritania, Angola, Somalia, Senegal, Swaziland, Congo, Rwanda, Malawi, Nigeria, Burkina Faso and Benin. Based on your knowledge and experience, which 3 countries hold the most Warthog SCI entries?

Not sure about SCI entries but if you look at Rowland Ward, I can tell you the record comes from my hometown, a place called Potchefstroom, in South Africa. The reason I know this, is because I measured and entered it. In our area we regularly shoot pigs of between 18-21" and body weights of 75kg (slaughtered).

I voted RSA, Namib and Zim, based on just sheer numbers of hunters there will be more entries. But the biggest warties I've ever seen have come from Uganda

That's a beautiful Warthog! I love it when their tusks grow inwards. Uganda has 19 entries out of 2,722 in the SCI, with 4 of them being in the top 100...

McElroy founded SCI in 1972. The Idi Amin coup took place in 1971. There hasn't been very much hunting in Uganda until recently and there still isn't much. Not surprising that Uganda doesn't have many entries. As James mentioned, there are some monsters there.

With tusks that size those are exceptional animals. As Wheels mentioned some pictures would be fun to see.

Wow, Thanks Jerome! Look at those warriors from Uganda... I'm doing extensive research on Warthogs. So any reliable information would be greatly appreciated. Here are some pictures from a consistently excellent warthog hunting area in South Africa.

One of the hidden Warthog Hunting grounds is Mauritania. Here are a couple of pictures from a couple of hunts:

The study includes but is not limited to:
  • Social behaviour (Specifically huge solitary males) who join the group only during mating season. A lot of the biggest warthogs have been taken during this period, which is generally at the end of rainy season, or at the beginning of dry season. And more specifically when they are applying the "roaming tactic".
  • The effect of hunting terrain (Rocky, Sand, etc.) and genetics on the size of the tusks.
  • And more...
The objective is to narrow down the variables (location, timing, hunting style...) to increase the chance of bumping into huge warthogs during a hunt.

i need to go on a warthog specific hunt...

this pig is the stuff of my dreams!:

For those who are interested, the correct answer is "South Africa, Zimbabwe, Tanzania". Here's the pie chart.

Very cool chart, nice to see the information presented like this.

This is a cool post! I learned a lot and agree with the meme er that said he now has a new goal- to hunt warthogs in every slice of the pie!
