I'll be going to Saskatchewan again this year in search of a big free range Whitetail or Mule Deer. My outfitter up north hunts a huge area of native land that boasts a very healthy population of Deer. The accommodations are very nice and based from a local bed and breakfast. He has picked up some new ground that has not been hunted in over 10 years, so we should see some nice Deer come out of there this year.

This is not your normal Saskatchewan Deer hunt, while the outfitter does utilize still hunting from heated blinds they also walk and stalk for Deer as well as call for them. Its a nice break from sitting in the stand all day.

The dates for the trip are arrive Nov 29 hunt Nov 30-Dec 5 depart late on the 5th or the 6th.

Since this is native land the tag is a multi species tag, you can shoot: Whitetail, Mule Deer, Moose, Elk or Wolf if you see one. Then you have the option to buy another tag and continue hunting for something else at no extra charge.

The hunt is normally $5,000 plus $500 for the tag, the outfitter has dropped the price $500 to cover the cost of the tag. The hunt all in is $5,000. extra tags are $500 each for a second or third animal.

There is an all too healthy population of wolves in the area as well. The outfitter is trying to negotiate a deal for his clients on Wolf tags to help reduce his numbers.

James,
What area in Saskatchewan? Nearest town? Reservation name? Drive to or fly in destination? Thanks!

The lodge is located in Cochin on the lake, fly into and out of Saskatoon, where the outfitter will pick you up.This is Salteaux Indian reservation land.

How much are the wolf tags and how many can you shot. John

Dammit James. Don't post stuff like this, it will make me spend money! That's a hellava deal be a hoot to take a big Muley and a moose or wolf.

Are prices in Canadian dollars?:)

Nice one Wheels!!!!

This is the perfect opportunity for those of you that have long dreamed of hunting with me...

This is where @Wheels says how much fun I am, LOL

Canadian $$, you guys are killing me.

@no1waterdog Right now the council sells one tag, its good for anything in the area, the tag is $500. But the outfitter is trying to get the price down and sell a wolf only tag for cheap 150-200$. I'll keep you posted, there is no limit but you do have to have a tag. I spoke to him yesterday and he saw a pack of 10 hanging out by a bait pile.

Actually I have hunted with James. If you go you will have a good time!(y)

(wonder if I will get paid for that comment?):ROFLMAO:

James,

Which week are you hunting? If not the offered week, why did you pick the week you did?

How realistic is it to shoot more than one animal over the 6 days of hunting?

How many times have you hunted with this group and what has been your success in previous years?

If I can't swing it for this year, what weeks are open for rifle next year?

John

Bet you get a big one James!

This is probably the only place where you can get a Saskatchewan muley. (I don't know about other reserves) Unless you're a Sask resident with an "A" pool priority, even us other Canucks aren't eligible for a muley tag. There are some monsters in the south country, buy alas, you have to be a resident to even apply.

@thi9elsp i went with this week, because it's when temps really start to plummet and the animals are moving and feeding. It's also late enough so the ground is really frozen and the big deer are moving. This time of year available food sources are the draw. I figure between the bait piles and the pea fields it should be great.

I think 2 deer or a Muley/whitetail are well within reason. Last year we were 90% successful on deer over 150". With the biggest taken while I was in camp being a 186". This is my second trip with the outfitter and I like the fact I can go out with one tag take anything that walks out and then buy another tag and go again.

Right now 2016 is wide open for dates. I have not even started looking at them.

James - thanks for the info. You are peaking my interest. I'm going to have to think really hard on this one. John

How are the chances to shoot a bull elk or a bull moose at that time and what size are they normally there?
And how are the chances with a bow?

@Norwegianwoods The chances for both are pretty good. He has some areas that are better for both than other, He has one area that always produces moose in the northern area of his concession. Its going to be an average Canadian moose, 40-45" spread. The bow always makes it more difficult, but the area is exclusive to the outfitter and hunting pressure is minimal. We had a couple guys last year take two very nice deer with a bow no problem.

It was pointed out to me that I neglected to post a follow up on the hunt.

As usual the weather does not cooperate for me, weather forecasted a warming trend early in the week. Day one i took a nice 165" deer and I was quite happy, i then proceeded to hunt wolves and coyotes for the remainder of the week. The weather warmed up and deer movement dropped off, we took a couple nice deer in the 145-155 range. On my last day the temp was 40 degree, but on the last morning of the last day the outfitter pulled out a monster for Eric scoring 180" (actually 179-4/8, but i m calling 180).
