Greetings from South Africa

Good day AH members,

been lurking around for a while now, and thoroughly enjoying this site, especially the big bore discussions.

I live and work our capital city, Pretoria , and have been exposed to our great sport since a young age. I have hunted most of South Africa, also once in Namibia, and in the coming month a first for me in Botswana, all plains game though. I have been fortunate to take most of the common plains game species available, although there are still quite a few to tick off, top of that list is the grey ghost, a big kudu bull. I have focused on finding one for the last 3 years, but it evaded me, or even prepared to say , outsmarted me every time.

I have 3 calibers all CZ's , my first ever firearm I owned is a 30-06, which is mainly used for bushveld hunting. I also own a 7mm Rem Mag, mostly used in open areas, and then my latest addition is a 416 Rigby, for which I am busy planning a buffalo hunt early next year with Gerrit from Bos en Dal safaris also here on the forum.

I also reload for all my firearms, Nosler Accubond 180gr for the 30-06, Barnes TTSX 150gr for the 7mm Rem Mag, and then Barnes TSX 400gr for the Rigby .

Welcome!!! I used a Savage in .300 Win Mag for my first plains game hunt (worked flawlessly) and recently purchased a CZ in .416 Rigby hoping to do a cape buffalo hunt in the future. Please let me know how yours goes.

@CAAustin - Thank you, and for the compliment on the caliber choices, I always find it interesting on how a decision was made when selecting a caliber, My 30-06 was an impulsive buy, actually at that stage looking for a 300WM, due to the fact that most of my hunting from a young age was done with one, but with a little bit of over the counter advise and the moment I handled that specific firearm I was sold, up to this day I did not look back, nor regretting my decision that day, and still is my go to gun, and a pleasure to reload for. My 7mm Rem Mag was a logical decision, with a lot of research done before I made that call. The 416 Rigby was a bit of both, and then obviously the nostalgia about the caliber was the final nail in the coffin.

@ Bob Newland, Thanks for the welcome, cant go wrong with a 300WM for plains game, did most of my hunting with one from a young age, before I was legally allowed to own my own firearm. What a calibre, hoping to add one to my arsenal some day. Congratulations with your choice on the CZ 416 Rigby, mine IS DEADLY ACCURATE , even surprisingly so. I did have is glass bedded and floated, the bolt polished, and the bolt handle bended up, to be able to grab it easier, for a quicker reload, especially because I shoot from my left shoulder, and bring my left hand over the bolt over to reload.

Will definitely do a report when the hunt is done.
