New USA requirements in addition to the form 4457

Questions gents,

Flying to Zim with a rifle and ammo and am leaving end of June. I am going to the closest CBP which is Salt Lake City, UT to get the 4457 in advance to have it. Couple questions.

Do I just show up to the CBP office at airport with rifle and ammo to get them to sign off? Do I need bill of sale for everything? I thought I read that something as simple as a packing list is all that is needed to have them fill out the 4457.

Also, if I fly from Salt Lake to JFK then on to Africa, will I have to do anything when I get to JFK on the way out. Can I get the papers checked and cleared in Salt Lake and then not deal with them in JFK?

Thanks for any help.

I have always just brought in the gun's for CBP to check the serial #. I have never had to bring in the ammo. I think your firearms will get checked thru to Africa. If you over night in NYC then you would have to recheck in the morning with Port PD..

Npm352 you go I. With proof of identification and the rifle. That's it. No ammo!

They like for you to have the bolt removed. (but have it with) NO ammo is correct, they might draw down on you if you have ammo and get a real gung ho type! Remember they could be real bored and they are armed and wearing a vest!

But our local office has at least three people who are pretty friendly about it, show up during regular business hours with the gun(s) locked in your hard travel case. Take your passport with and a friendly attitude and you should be fine... You can list your binos and camera as well, they will probably want to list your scope at least. The form is to prove you owned the items before leaving the country so they don't charge you an excise tax, give you greif over bringing the stuff back, etc. However Zimbabwe uses it as your firearm "license".. They don't quite get it that we don't have to have our firearms licensed in the US.

I made the mistake of printing the forms out on line... All typed out nice and pretty and printed on 8.5 x 11... That confused the Zim folks who aren't used to seeing it that way... And cost us a few extra hours at the border! So just let the CBP people fill it in by hand on their own little sheet. And take the original with to Zimbabwe!

I had the same thing happen in Zim with that Zim form you have to fill out. The travel agency sent me one in the mail to fill out in advance, but it was a different size than the "real" one, so I had to fill out another one. All info was the same, but the guy at the "office" didn't want to chence it.

As far as the flying to JFK thing goes, if your airline is partnered up with your departing international airline then they will likely transfer your rifle without you having to go thru all the BS JFK has to offer. Let me tell you it aint fun! You need to ask your airline on the phone if they will transfer your firearm for you. For instance United is paired with SAA and will (at least used to) transfer your gun for you. Last time I flew I had Jet Blue for domestic and SAA and wonderful Jet Blue would NOT transfer the rifle case for me at JFK, forcing me into a real clusterf**k, go-round, drag assing all over the airport dragging my rifle case with me to make the transfer myself. It was a real and royal PITA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Call your airline so you know ahead of time what to do.

I can also vouch for Jet Blue in JFK being a real pain in the rear. Real clusterf**k is spot on. I'll avoid flying JetBlue and JFK if I can from now on.

I have heard that Jet Blue is not firearm friendly, and I have heard it from a couple different people.

When I booked with Lori this year she set me up with Delta from Denver to Salt Lake City and then to NYC to connect with South African Airways and it went quite well. Coming back I connected in Dulles with United and the only problem was with the customs agents not knowing what was going on but other than that it went quite smooth.

Really why would an American go to Africa and buy a rifle to bring back when they are very cheap here. I have been overseas hunting three times and was never ask for the 4457 but I showed it anyway.

This is great info guys. Thank you.

I am delta from SLC to JFK and SAA from JFK to j-burg then Vic falls. I will call and see.

Got back from Namibia on Tuesday June 8th from a 10 day hunt (11 animals taken) with my son. We traveled JFK (New York) to Frankfurt (Germany) to Windhoek (Namibia), and return. No issue whatsoever, Form #4457 was all that was asked for. It was as if this crap never happened. I'm soooo glad I now have a small business account which I'll never need, but they have more information on me. Thanks NRA, SCI, and DSC, I'm glad the money I pay you each year to protect our rights goes to good use. Next time, and there will be a next time, how about you keep up with what's going on before it goes into motion.

Brushmore;
I think Otsego44 was refering to the problems with the additional requirements for taking firearms out (and bringing them back) with using just the form 4457. Talk about a sh!tstorm!! Even the federal agencies that were suppose to implement the policies of the Obama administration didn't know how to implement the policies of the Obama administration.......one in another series of "unintended consequences" that the individual in the oval office failed (once again) to anticipate.
To be fair, I think all of the executive branch needs a "high colonic" to purge what passes for "legislators" nowadays......I wrote to several members of congress and senators re: the additional requirements back when this all started (April?).....I received my first response from a representative yesterday, and it was nothing more than a preprinted form letter stating he was for 2nd amendment rights.....nothing that specifically addressed the issue of the 4457 FUBAR thrust upon us by the clown in the oval office.
Similarly, unless it is an assault (pun intended) on AR15s/black rifles, the NRA really doesnt seem to give a damn anymore...........hunters have fallen by they wayside, and while they may be giving lip service to issues that affect hunters, they are more concerned with preserving high capacity magazines and AP ammo, not duck guns or dangerous game rifles, let alone getting hunters to Africa (or Canada, for that matter) hassle free.......and they wonder why they have a hard time getting long term supporters to "reup"? I think that they would have a larger population base if they actually did something re: hunters firearms and hunters rights, instead of just giving lip service. I know of several folks who have let their memberships with the NRA lapse because they feel that they no longer represented what they stood for (primarily hunting) and spent the money on other, more localized conservation groups instead.

So all of that talk about change came to nothing? All I need is my Form 4457?

For now...

Postoak,
All you need is the 4457 until further notice.
The previous attempt by the government to impose the export filing requirement is not being enforced. If anything changes, we will advise accordingly but nothing will be happening in the foreseeable future.

I think you are being a tad unfair to the NRA here. The NRA is about protecting gun rights for American gun owners and that means all guns. The NRA is not just about black rifles or AP ammo, not at all, and it certainly does not shun protecting hunting rifle rights. Not sure how you got that idea, but it aint so. They are about protecting our rights as citizens to continue to own and shoot what we currently can own and shoot and not giving up anymore than we already have. The NRA has never been about hunters rights per se., its a pro gun group, not necessarily pro hunting though it obviously is that as well and does what it can with its limited resources, but again its about protecting our gun rights, regardless the type of gun, and its still the big dog in town when it comes to membership and funds for that purpose. SCI, DSC etc., are the ones more involved in hunting and travel etc. I don't work for the NRA but I am an Endowment Life Member. On a lighter note my old grandma used to liken getting a "high colonic" to anything that would be particularly unpleasant, right along with getting a root canal! She was a real hoot!:D
