Hi Everyone, New to AH and really African hunting in general. I am a life long hunter but have never had the funds to consider Africa (although with some research I've found it can be affordable). With a recent job change I've been afforded a some additional vacation time and a LITTLE spare change. I have a two week window in September (is this short notice?) that I have likely decided to spend in Africa. That said, this is more of a vacation but I love to hunt too much to not book a hunt while I am there (want to get the feel for the hunt and definitely plan a future more elaborate hunt). I will be by myself and would like to take 3-5 animals but I am unsure of the time needed to do this. Realistically, to fit in the remainder of my vacation a 5 day hunt would be my maximum. In general, I prefer the most traditional experience possible (and the bigger the property the better). I also acknowledge that with what I'm looking for (accessibility for a shorter hunt) I won't be headed to the deepest bush of Africa and spending 3 days in search of one animal, but I would assume a happy medium is out there. I am just getting started looking (and love the process) but it is clear this will be the most overwhelming hunt I have tried to plan. I'd love some advice and comments in general about recommended provinces and it would also be great to start making some outfitter connections as the google list is never ending. Thanks in advance for the help and here are the 5 animals I think I want to consider in order (but subject to change).
- Kudu
- Gemsbok
- Zebra
- Warthog
- Impala

Welcome to AH.

A few months is relatively short notice, considering many plan years out. No issue. Contact the Outfitters and see if they have open dates that correspond to your schedule.

3-5 animals in five days can be done.

All you have to do is look at the Sponsors of this site and you'll get some ideas.
Look in the Deals section for introductory safaris and you'll get a good idea.

Good luck.

Welcome to AH !

Welcome to the AH family, sure you will find exactly what you are looking for, feel free to contact myself if you would like to know more about our operation.

My best always

Welcome to AH! You can find it all here if you look far enough...

How much non hunting vacation are you planning on? My wife and I did the EC a year ago for the first time (and again a month ago;), 9 days hunting and 11 days touring, 3 with a guide and 8 with a rental car on our own. Had a blast! You will too.

You should be able to plan it for Sept but do need to get on with it! Unfortunately you will miss out on the year of fun planning and lamenting over this and that;)

You can easily get 5 critters in 5 days, especially if you can be a little flexible... Prioritize things, like if you really want a kudu, impala and zebra, they are in many areas... A Gemsbok is a bit more specialized areas so be flexible and perhaps consider a black or blue wildebeest or red hartebeest for about the same cost or a waterbuck for a bit more... Warthogs can be everywhere but I have still not found the real trophy wart hog I want even after 3 major trips and 4 hunts (I got one on the last hunt, but not huge tusks). If you go to a good area for Gemsbok, it probably has springbuck so consider those together. Springbuck are fun and can be challenging!

If you have a little extra budget for more critters, you may well have opportunity in 5 days.... Then again you could burn up most of your days looking for "the" kudu you want!

And if your combining some touring or other non hunting vacation time... I would suggest visiting with your outfitter about how flexible he can be and if you can tour an extra day if you get done hunting early or add a day hunting if you are onto something but don't get it an just want to try one more day... Or even a half day. To me anyway, I love a bit of flexibility.

I would highly recommend you DO NOT overthink your gun, go with what you got and shoot well. Whatever you shot that stag with or that you hunt deer with should do fine, just use good bonded or monolithic bullets.

One final thing that is really important... You have to find time to tell us about that critter in your avatar!

Welcome to AH.

You should be able to make things happen.

+1 what Brickburn said.

If you have any questions, just ask.

Another outfitter/owner/ph to try would be Iliwa Safaris. We went with them in 2013 and it was great. It was economical and we had a number of SCI record book animals without going to get book animals. Great people. Father and son own the land and are the PH's. It is a large place.
There are other on the forum who would also treat you right.
Welcome aboard

Welcome to the site. Depending on the dates you have opened to do the hunt we maybe able to help you. Have a 12,000 acre ranch 90 minutes from the airport or can hunt on 50,000 acres with a short flight or driveto the Kimberly area. Even a short 5 day hunt is worth it. Good luck in the planning.

Welcome to AH @wzf0001

You are surely amongst the right group of peeps to help plan and guide you through the booking of a hunt on such short notice in South Africa! Feel free to contact the many outfitters on the forum, and also members that has been with the outfitters to decide on who will get your business.

A good read would be to go to the Hunt Reports section of the forum, where you would be able to find extensive information about the outfits and people offering services.

The Tootabi Team would be honoured to be afforded the opportunity to quote you on a memorable, authentic and exclusive safari in Africa. Both making family on African soil, and secondly memories that would be lasting a lifetime.

Feel free to drop me an e-mail and we can get the ball rolling. It all starts here... loodt.buchner@tootabi.com

Yours cordially,

Welcome to AH. Glad the tide has turned for you and you can manage a Safari in SA,you won't regret it!!
September is not the best time for Kudu, but it's way better than not hunting them at all.
You are in good hands here on AH and I am sure you will find something that slots right into your budget and travel plans.

welcome to ah

i am sure you can be taken care of by our resident PH's

Welcome to AH. I'm sure you'll find what your looking for here.

Halo wzf0001

Ingwe safari with Lieb Duran in south Africa has some great opportunities for all the animals on your list. they run a great operation and the food is wonderful.
i have been twice with my wife and two children and our experience has been nothing short of awesome.

Welcome to AH! Namibia is the perfect choice for a first time African Safari. We offer the finest FREE RANGE plains game safaris in North Western Namibia - a very traditional experience in a huge private hunting area. Except for Impala, you will find the first 4 species on your list in their natural habitat. We have Sept 19 - 24 available. Happy planning!

Welcome, and enjoy the short planning period. Next time do like I did, and plan well over a year that way you can drive yourself absolutely bonkers until the hunt date! I m still bonkers as my hunt is in September....

Hi everyone, Thanks for all of the welcomes and replies. I have been in contact with quite a few of the sponsors. I am currently living in Australia and have ultimately decided to take my time off in September to do a water buffalo hunt here in the Northern Territory. Basically I realize how many opportunities there are in Africa and I want to take my time to review them all and enjoy the process. You can expect to hear some more questions for me as I try to line something up for Africa 2016. Thanks again.
