Travel Tip

Go as light as possible, the less luggage you have the less chance some bags will get lost enroute. Also, be sure to tip the baggage guys at the airport to make sure your bags get on the correct flight.

If you are taking your own guns, be sure to call your insurance agent and take out a travel policy. Sometimes guns are "lost" in Africa.
 
Firearm Permit

If you are traveling through JHB airport I highly reccomend using the services of AIR2000. They will meet you at the gate and walk you through the firearms office with a smile. Worth every penny of it..............
 
going thorugh security alwasy easier to put your cell phone, keys... in your carryon to recude the hassle.
 
Use a reputable travel professional like Lori. When you are in a foreign country, it is nice to have the phone number and contact information of an actual person. An internet website or 1 800 number just don't cut it when things go wrong.
 
Get trip insurance or buy tickets with refund option. Life is a crazy thing and can throw you a curve. This very thing happened to me last year and having a refundable ticket really saved me a significant financial loss.
 
Pack all prescription medications in your carry on luggage.

Make sure you have more than enough time when you hit customs here if changing to another flight. You can really get held up at customs and miss your connection. It happened to me.
 
Clothing while Flying:

Find a friend who works in the medical profession and have them get you some hospital scrubs to change into on the plane.....as light weight as it comes and extremely comfortable.

If you are a bowhunter and thus flying with a bow, DON'T buy a big hard case. It can many times get confused for a rifle and all the headaches associated with that. Your life will be much easier through security and customs if you dress in normal wear (no camo, etc) and put your bow in a rolling duffel bag securely packed with clothing. That way you can roll right through while your rifle hunting counterparts are answering questions and filling out paperwork. Arrows should be stored in MTM hard cases and you are ready to go!
 
If you are planning on bringing back souvenirs and other neat things, pack another small to medium sized bag INSIDE your regular bag. That way you have a souvenir bag ready to go.
 
Take some of your rattiest clothes along. Underwear that has seen it's better days, tee shirts that might have stains or tears, etc, etc. Upon wearing a time or two, you can either give them away to your trackers, camp staff, or community members and have more room in your bag to either bring stuff back or make it lighter for travel. I do this every trip and it serves several purposes. Always keep a nice shirt or two for trophy photos, but most animals don't care what your fashion statement is while hunting.
 
The one thing I did on my second safari...was put all my keys (vehicle, home and gun case) + lip balm and put it in a plastic sandwich bag and put it in my front pocket...that way it was easy to toss in the airport bins and not have stuff flying here and there....the first safari...I felt like a idiot...chasing around lose change, keys...etc.
 
Make sure you have someone drop you off at the airport and pick you up if you can...so you don't have to pay all the parking charges...this can add up to a lot of money.

I put a key in a magnetic holder, drove to airport, parked my car, called my buddy to pick my car up later, gave directions...where it was and where the key was. I was single at the time and didn't have anyone to drop me off early in the morning.

When you book tickets, try to book an aisle and a window seat with the middle seat left open hoping that it will not sell. Do not book Jet Blue to connect to South African Airways in New York. I did that in September and despite a code share agreement Jet Blue refused to check my bags through onto South African. The Jet Blue ticket agent in Jacksonville even brought me behind the ticket counter and showed me Jet Blue's policy that it does not check firearms as checked baggage onto South Africn!!! Beware of Jet Blue!
 
firearms 4457

The MOST important document to protect you and your firearms is the US Customs Form 4457. It keeps you out of jail, documents ownership of your guns / binoculars / cameras / & sensitive or high-dollar items. It allows you to re-enter the USA with your firearms etc, & just saves a lot of hassle.
 
Regardless of the country destination for hunting or photo safari, be sure to check which gov't forms are REQUIRED to legally enter that country. The forms to carry firearms are much different than just a tourist visa. That's where an expert like Travel Express comes in...so thanks again for sponsoring this drawing!
 
foreign customs

We found the following to work good for us: Upon arrival at the final foreign airport destination, one person took appropriate documents and went to the separate Customs locations for the firearms & one person went for the regular luggage.
