Dream rifle

1. Westley Richards drop lock in .450/400 3" with 26" ejector barrels and spare 26" ejector barrels in .303 British, stocked to fit me and WR express sights, including their "twilight front bead" (AKA geezer bead).

2. Pre-War Orberdorf Magnum square bridge Model 98 Mauser 24" barrel, in .375 H&H, claw mounted with 4x Austro-German scope.

3. Same rifle and optics as above Mauser, but in .300 H&H.

1. the H&H 600 NE i handled at the last SCI show.
2. a Heym 88b "Safari" in 450 NE 3.25" with 28" barrels, custom engraving, and ejector/extractor control.
3. a Kilimanjaro Doctari in 505 Gibbs with upgrades.

first, welcome to the forum!

having shot a few now, i can say you would be surprised at how manageable they really are. most double rifles are actually easier to shoot then their bolt action cousins. the balance of the gun and how it acts under recoil are very different. moving from a 375 H&H to a double in 500/416 NE was very easy and the 470 NE is about the same. when you start getting into guns over .500" the recoil gets a little more intense but in a gun that fits you its just a harder push.

hi marianna welcome to AH, and as matt said you shouldnt find them a problem especially in the smaller cals like .450/400 which will work fine on anything including the big stuff.

I'd have offered up a Purdey SxS in 450-400 3", or a Boss O/U in the same (love the Boss O/U), but that's so very far beyond the realm of possibility, I won't let my dream wander to such a place (in other words, I prefer to have a dream which has some hope of one day becoming reality).

Nice rifles them. Had the pleasure of handling one. Beautiful and at that price a bargain.
Cheaper than the same rifle by Mauser on this side of the pond.

Prettier (and more classy) than the same by Mauser, as well.

The rifle doesn't have crazy gorgeous wood, but I'm cool with that because were the piece in my possession it'd be used and used hard, for everything.

Couldn't agree more. Rigby's of old never were that glamorous (unless requested).
Plain straight grained wood, military bottom metal, little (if any engraving), no grip cap and a utilitarian butt pad/plate are all Rigby trademarks.

True working guns and I'm glad they've carried it over with the phosphate coating. Not as pretty as blues but God it's functional.

#2: Rigby London Best single square bridge .416 Rigby

#3: Biesen custom .375 Ruger W/english walnut, quarter rib, and gold bead front sight. (yes, I know the Biesen's aren't taking any more orders, but these are dream guns)

A more realistically attainable list of dream rifles would include:

#1: Ruger 77RSM .416 Rigby

#2: Winchester model 70 Super Grade .270 Win.

#3: Original Winchester 71 deluxe .348 Win.

*also included would be any and all Ruger No. 1's

#1 An H&H royal SxS in 12 ga.

#2 A custom magazine rifle to my specification. A magnum length Mauser type action in .458 Lott. Smooth bolt handle. Winchester Model 70 style safety. 23" barrel with a recessed crown. Barrel band ivory bead front sight. Barrel band front sling swivel. Peep sight mounted on the rear receiver. Aimpoint H1 mounted low on the front receiver so the peep is usable through the lower 1/3. A drop box magazine that comfortably holds 5 rounds. Stocked in a nice, but not fancy, straight grain walnut with the rear swivel inleted. Ebony end cap. Steep grip cap. A saddle leather covered recoil pad (I don't like grippy pads). Crossbolts that are plugged with ebony. Blued with my initials in the floorplate. To top it off I would like the action cut for stripper clips in the Mauser fashion (closing the bolt kicks the clip free) including the thumb relief. Stripper clips to go with it. I just like the idea of stripper clips and I don't know how practical it would be for a DGR.

#3 A Shiloh Sharps in 45-70. (I already have this one)

Sadly, I think #1 and #2 are out of my price range and I don't know if #2 is even possible. Both are nice to dream about though.

I can't remember my exact words right now either but it was something like:

"I spent most of my money on Mausers, DoubleRifles and African Safaris, the rest I just wasted"

Or, words to that affect .... and they're not very far from the truth, thankfully.
