SCI ALERT!! New regulations for exporting your firearms!

Once I disabled my pop-up blocker I was home free. Had my ITN about 5 minutes after submitting the EEI.

If you can't seem to get anywhere on AES, be sure pop-up blocker is disabled!

How long is the AES and ITN good for?

AES is just the Automated Export System.

You create an EEI for each export you are going to do, and they issue a specific ITN for that shipment.

So each time you leave the country with firearms, you do a new EEI to get the new ITN assigned to that "export".

Clear as mud, right? :censored:

Tarbe, you are correct. Your ITN is only good for the one trip. This really kills me because, I go to Canada every spring bear hunting, and was going to bring the same rifle and ammo this year, just so I wouldn't have to go thru this again. But as you stated, it's only good for one trip, seeing the destination portion on the AES is different. :(

Hopefully 6 months down the road this will be just a old nightmare that a few of us had to go through for the spring hunts this year. I can just imagine the nightmares that some will have this fall if it is still in effect for the hunters that are headed north that don't know about it.

Well, we can hope can't we????

Think of it as a tracking number, as with UPS, FedEx or USPO, each time you ship an item a new number is assigned to the package. It is just a nuisance in this situation, since the package is already being tracked with an airline baggage claim number. We can all hope that they realize the error-of-their-ways, and go back to the method that was working just fine. It is govt however, once something like this gets in, it is difficult to get them to reverse it.

I think we started this ball rolling downhill, with a post from someone that was "informed" of the regulation and with that post WE started a snowball that picked up speed due to our inquiries to NRA, SCI and Government reps. Up to that time it had been largely ignored, until WE brought it to the forefront. Once Pandora's box was open it could not be shut. Of the numerous Customs contacts that I have spoken to, they knew nothing of this issue until a short time ago. There was not even a logistic manner to implement this until now that they are currently working on it. Sometimes let sleeping dogs lie. This regulation was in effect since 2012. If customs were to enforce this, then why, up until now were they not informed and a plan of enforcement established. Well, April 3, has come snd gone and still no game plan from customs, so much for the beginning enforcement date, IRS rules are to be modified so that individuals can secure a EIN to process their weapons thru AES for the EEI snd ITN, ......JMO but We awoke a sleeping giant PIA. Being pro active on a rumor can sometimes comeback to bite. Leave well enough alone, until they establish the policy is being enforced and they have all the logistics established. Apparently no one has received any information from their elected officials on any remedy or additional information. My opinion only and not meant to initiate any verbal sparring.

Thanks a lot @ActionBob , you started a national crisis!!!! ;)

In all seriousness, there could be some truth to this, but you just never know. Ignoring something like this doesn't do any good, in my opinion. As it will come to fruition sooner or later. And I think we are better to deal with this now, rather than later.

I've always been of the opinion that this wouldn't be implemented by 04/03, or in the next 90 days after. That doesn't however; mean it isn't coming.

Certainly not picking on Actionbob, he was only sharing what he was told. It was our knee jerk reaction that May have been the impetus for this to proceed as it has. Atlanta customs, Export division , told me the upper echelon were "working" on the logistics and that the 4457 would be the norm until everything was worked out.

Knew you weren't.

My point was that getting this out in the open sooner rather than later may not be a bad thing in the long run. Hidden "law", and I use that term loosely as it was an EO, isn't a good thing. I want it out there in the open. As we all know, ignorance of the law isn't an excuse.

I'd much rather us all scream and yell and bring it to the forefront than to wake up one day and find out the government has quietly and secretly actually built the systems and process to support this.

This is what the agents in Houston told me...until they spoke to Vincent Huang in D.C.

After that conversation, they said we better get the ITN.

I really don't want to be the poster boy for what happens when you ignore a Federal reg!

Yes I started the thead but it was not to start some great snoball effect And it wassure as hellnot something i dug up to cause youall grief. It was simply to pass on information I was given when I took a new gun in to get my 4457. The Customs agent handed me a sheet and Iinstructed me to follow the directions and get this done before I left. which is tonight so I hope I'm not on here explaining much more about this.

I certainly never intended this to get out of hand but thought folks would like to be informed before they show up at the airport and find out they don't have what they need.

I see it a lot like Obama care, you have to comply by this deadline but you can't because the government system is not in place. Fortunately, the agent I dealt with is being very rational and said as long as I am trying to comply he has instructed his office to let it through. But thanks to Robert and his team I have mine done.

@Areaonereal I appreciate you stated you have no intention of a sparing match on this. But I do think your out of line on your comment and I'll leave it at that.

Bob

I am very glad you brought this up.

Gave me a chance to run it to ground 40 days prior to leaving....otherwise who knows? I might have ended up in prison in Atlanta when trying to change planes, relying on Royal to bail me out!

This is what he'd be doing.....:A Wave Sad: See you later honey!

Have a great trip Bob!

I completely disagree with letting sleeping dogs lie on this one. Since ignorance of the law is no excuse then anyone of us traveling could be charged with a serious felony at the whim of a customs agent that was familiar with the law. I think this all complete and utter B.S. but what kind of nation would we have if laws could be selectively followed and/or enforced?

I agree 100%....and I am afraid we are beginning to see exactly how that all works out (pen and a phone).

Have an AWESOME trip Bob!!! (y) (y) (y)

Brushmore your so right... but I worry what kind of slope we are slipping down when the guy at the top can do what he wants how he wants without the checks and balance designed into the system. And with no respect for that system.
