My son and I are going to S. Africa on our first safari mid April. I dont want to spend a lot of money on brand name safari clothing but I want to take adequate, proper stuff. Where do you guys buy your clothing? I found some stuff at Bass Pro (2 miles from my home) that is in my budget. What do you think? I prefer pants over hunting in shorts. Thanks!

Don't really need anything more then what you use here in the states. I wear the same camo clothing I use here and my same boots.

If you like the stuff you posted it will work also. Just make sure you break the boots in before you get there.

I'm with Bill, whatever you are comfortable wearing that fits the local color scheme of the environment. Being a former grunt, make sure your boots are broke in before you go. Nothing will ruin a trip of a lifetime if you have to deal with blisters and cannot walk.

Just also remember when there in april things are still pretty green so tan will stick out more to the eye. That's why I would just say just some good camo with mixed colors would be best.

I used flexible soled hikers like you showed. Key word flexible = comfortable and quiet. As for pants and shirts I'm with Bill, particularly on well broken in boots. I'm true to my Scottish heritage and got camo pants at Walmart $20 and Green long sleeved shirts for $15. Get a wide brimmed hat to keep the sun off your ears and neck

Do yourself a favor and spray your socks, pants and shirts with Permethrin http://www.walmart.com/ip/Sawyer-Permethrin-Premium-Clothing-Insect-Repellent-Pump-24-oz/21947774 just before you leave. It will keep the ticks off you for the time you are there and kill any bugs in your luggage on the way home.

This is the best camo on the planet for hunting on a farm in RSA. "Farm Worker Camo"

Just so you can see just how much all the fancy cloths matter. (Only required on PHOTO SAFARIS)
Imagine yourself with this young man leading the way on your Bushbuck hunt.
Now relax and buy the stuff you already selected and have fun.

I found E-Bay has some decent deals on Used clothes I found some nice used camo pants, shirts and real nice hunting Vest and you really only need 2 sets of hunting cloths as your laundry is done on a daily basis

All great suggestion and I really like the farm worker cammo. Keep it as simple as possible.

When I talked to my PH about clothing he did mention darker colors for at least my shirts. I am actually planning on picking up a couple of pair of green rip stop BDU's for pants. I figure that if they will work for the cactus and thorns of southern Arizona they should work for SA.

Excellent, just excellent! And I bet you it's infused with natural scent blocker as well!

It was certainly one of those occasions when you would like to be walking with the wind when you are not at the front of the line. :)

Most of my hunting clothes are from Goodwill / Salvation Army / Army-Navy Surplus type stores.
My boots for Africa are Courteney brand from Westley Richards.

Your existing stuff for hunting in AZ will be fine. If you want to splurge, have Russell Moccassin make you a pair of their Safari PH boots

All good advice so far. The only thing I can add is to not pack too heavy. Three changes at most as clothes are laundered on a daily basis in most, if not all camps. Then a vest and jacket to layer up for early morning or late returns.

Unless of course you hunt somewhere other than RSA
Most other countries Camo is illegal. Not just for hunting...period

That said, I doubt it is enforced much in the bush. But you don't want to wear camo in public in the cities outside of RSA

Smart man. When I first joined years ago I went the whole route, Courtney Boots, etc for my first safari. My experience was a waste of good money on my big name clothing. I sold everything. Second safari I took a pair of Columbia boots, quick drying shirts and solid good quality cotton shirts and pants both short and long. Good quality wool socks and was extremely happy with my choices. Highly recommend you watching @Philip Glass videos to prepare for your safari. I am now on my third and they were spot on for me. Good luck!
