I am planning my third Plains game safari and will be bringing my 7x57. I have a very accurate load with the above projectile at a mild 2,361 fps. I consider myself a competant to good shot.

What is the largest Plains Game you would recommend I attempt with this combination.

Hi Code 4 !!! you can bring down a pachyderm with this most versatile caliber deviced by John Rigby in 1899 (7x57).

WDM Bell the commercial Ivory Hunter of repute killed 1000 elephants with brain shots using 175 grainers FMJ thru his 7x57 John Rigby Bolt rifle , impressed with the reciolessness, flat trajectory, and velocity.

The famous maneating leopard of Rudrapryag which claimed 125 human life in its career of 8 years 1918-1926 in India was shot by Jim Corbett in 1926 using the .275 John Rigby bolt rifle

So its you Man shooting !! place the bullet at the right spot and bag a classic trophy. with this classic cartridge

happy hunting !!!!!

Any input from Africa ?

I took a gemsbok and a Kudu with a 195 RN spitzer SN by and warthogs and impala with 140 Spitzer loaded by Federal at MV of 2700, thru a .275(7X57) by Brno. Its shoots well and has a killing impact . Never tried a 160 hope you get good trophies.

I have to call you on that one monish as you seem to have made a typo.

Rigby did not devise the 7x57 and certainly not in 1899.
This was a military caliber developed by the Mauser balisticians in 1891-92 and first released in 1893. The Spanish had this cartridge in 1893 and later the mod 95 as did the Boer and by 1895 its use had spread to South America military's as well. Rigby renamed the cartridge the 275 for British use in the custom rifle trade. Bell used the 173gn solid for his ele shooting, and eventually had 6 Rigby 275's.

Code 4 I have not hunted Africa but am a long time devotee of the 7x57 and a well constructed 160gn bullet up to the task for the medium to large PG. I would happily look at Kudu-Zebra with my 7x57 and the 160gn Woodleigh although it sees 2700fps over 46gn H4350.

Von,

Thanks for correcting me on this , but its a caliber most astounding , have used this cartridge a lot through my BRNO full stock driven game rifle.
Jim Corbett shot some most vile maneaters with this caliber a Rigby .275 gifted to him by the Governer Sir John Hewitt for killing a maneater.

The bullet is fine, I shoot that bullet in a 600 ZKK myself. I don't think you will have much of a problem with anything up to say Eland with good shot angles and placement. My load is 48 gr of IMR-4350 in a RP Nickel Case. I get groups that you can cover with a dime. Kill 7 elk and 8 moose with this load over the years. The load is a stout one, and if you try it, start at 44 gr and work up .

Hi Code 4
I haven't hunted with the 7x57 myself i used the 30-06 but my brother used the 7x57 extensively even for culling wildebeest and that is one mean rifle. I would not stand back for up to Kudu and even Eland if you are a crack shot and can place the bullet in the engine room. The best rifle is always the one you are the most comfortable with and can shoot accurately even from a awkward stance (shooting position) because in the bush you don't always have a nice padded bench to shoot over.

Hi Code4
I have a 7x57 myself and it is more than big enough for most if not all the plains game in Africa make sure to use good 170gr bullets.
Shot placement is key but I would even take on an Eland bull with my 7x57.
Cheers
Louis
