I will be traveling to Sierra Leone next year and I was wondering if there was any hunting there anymore?

I know it is still one of the best places in the world for the zebra duiker. I didnt know if there was any hunting for it there.

Hunting Sierra Leone

mallard14,
I have no information on hunting in Sierra Leone, nor do I know of anyone who has hunted there. I would recommend you contacting the Embassy of Sierra Leone in London, United Kingdom, to find out some information from them. Check out the Embassy website for contact information at www.slhc-uk.org.uk. It seems that they do a bit of fishing, here is a tourist website that you might want to look at www.visitsierraleone.org.

A bit of background information on this country
Democracy is slowly being reestablished after the civil war from 1991 to 2002 that resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of more than 2 million people (about one-third of the population). The military, which took over full responsibility for security following the departure of UN peacekeepers at the end of 2005, is increasingly developing as a guarantor of the country's stability. The armed forces remained on the sideline during the 2007 presidential election, but still look to the UN Integrated Office in Sierra Leone (UNIOSIL) - a civilian UN mission - to support efforts to consolidate peace. The new government's priorities include furthering development, creating jobs, and stamping out endemic corruption.

Hunting in Sierra Leone

Thanks for your help!

mallard14, good luck with your trip and please let us know what you find out regarding the hunting in Sierra Leone.

About ten years ago there was plenty of hunting for RUF in Sierra Leone, but i think that's been closed down. Mostly South Africans got in on that, for excellent prices, as I understand. ;) Tastelessness aside, I would be interested to know what the progress of this little nation is. If hunting became available, that would be both a sign of stability and another means for economic progress in a land that has had more than its share of hard times. I understand the tarpon fishing is supposed to be as good as anywhere in the world off the coast of Sierra Leone, and I think there are operations that do fishing charters there. Hunting could be a great benefit to the animals of Sierra Leone, because the restoration of stability seems to have increased the pressure on wildlife habitat there from logging and other uses. Their chimpanzee and endangered pygmy hippopotamus population could only benefit from having some forest areas protected for the hunting of animals like Bongo or the above mentioned zebra duiker. Let's hope!
