Zimbabwe Elephant Hunt Special 2014

SSI, thanks for the info and link. It was understood.. What we are discussing is having replica tusks made. And selling the hide to a market in Africa and also selling the actual ivory in Africa to a legit market... If there is a legit market.

Do you have any input as far as marketing ivory? Is there a legal and legitimate market available?

Also, the following statement seems a little confusing.
<This trade suspension only affects the import of trophy shipments. It does not apply to the import of live African elephants or other elephant parts and products from Zimbabwe.>

So what qualifies to be imported when it says the rule does NOT apply to "other elephant parts and products from Zimbabwe"???? Can I import a footstool made from an elephant foot? Elephant skin cowboy boots? An elephant skin Jacket? A diorama of some African hunting spears and shields attached to panel of elephant skin or an elephant ear as a frame or base? Other artwork based on elephant skin? How about a plant holder made with a base of an elephant skull? A lamp made with an elephant leg bone for a stand?

And is this only from Zimbabwe but not Tanzania?

Thanks in advance for any additional feedback.

Good morning Sir....
Thank you for your feedback....I am unable to respond regarding the marketplace to which you refer because to date, we have no first hand knowledge.
I did, however, speak with our USFWL attorney regarding the last line of the announcement regarding the trade embargo of elephant from both Zimbabwe AND Tanzania. He stated that the last line of the announcement is up to interpretation. If a USFWL officer finds cause for seizure as he/she deems necessary based on their interpretation, it will be seized--period. Remember, USFWL is law enforcement, therefore, they have the last word and then you are left with a fight to get it back if you have the evidence to do so.
Based on the current embargo and inherent ambiguity on the interpretation of the last line you stated below, why would anyone even risk the chance and spend that kind of money for the 'unknown'? We deal with these issues everyday and 'caution' is the operative word because the risk does not outway the benefit when USFWL is involved.

SSI, Thanks again!

It is frustrating that in these regulatory issues with government agencies, we seem to be assumed guilty until proven innocent.

Sure would be great if they would lay things out more clearly.

ActionBob,
Then they will not have any FUN.......

I recieved a email yesterday form our association ZPHGA , it's just a bit of useful info if anyone is hunting Trophy Elephant in Zim and not using all the raw hide.

Safvest seeking Elephant Hide

I represent a company called Safvest and we are trying to secure volumes of Raw elephant hide for export. We are fully licenced and hold a valid Trophy Dealers Licence.

We are paying above market rates for raw elephant hide panels being $4/kg.

I believe this will benefit all operators who have been impacted by the US Ban.

would one be able to ship the ivory to south Africa for keeping with close friends or relatives?

Hell of a hunt for the money!!!

Guys we are on our way home after a successful hunt. On layover in Paris so more details when i get home and find time. Saw lots of elephant and had some very close encounters with buffalo. Like flushing one at 10 feet! The buffalo hunt conditions are very tough and for those who think shooting a buffalo is like shooting cattle, I highly recomend you follow Quinn closely into this bush, just don't get run over by the tracker when he almost steps on a buffalo! We left one heck of a nice dugga boy there and there are others around as well. Quinn has trail cam pics but this is a smart and tricky old guy, we tried but failed on him. We could had a good chance the eveing after I took by buff but with Ann along we really wanted to get out of that tent camp and have a couple nights at main camp so packed up and headed out. But we did go with to the village to distribute the meat first... My first shot was through both lungs but missed the heart and was behind the shoulder, he was walking and would not stop so had to take a moving shot. That bull took a lot of convincing to get him to die!

These were my first elephant and first buffalo and first DG. 50 and 53 pounds on the tusks and about 35" spread on the buff with decent drop and hard bosses, Quinn measured him but I need him to email the numbers as I forgot to write them down. He makes sci though. I am thrilled with both for my first DG. And will deffinately be looking for a larger or older buffalo, probably both!

We hunted hard and got the elephant on day 9 and buff on day 11. Bothewere gifts from the hunting Gods after coming so close on several other days.

The elephant is a particulary interesting hunt in this area both before and after it is down. The ivory is currently not exportable to the US but there are many other rewards on this elephant hunt. There are bigger bulls around but takes some luck to find them in the right place at tne right time.

Quinn estimated the elephant at 50 years old and the buff at 7 to 8.

There is another good elephant with about a foot broken off the left tusk that someone should go shoot! He is old and getting thin but is living in an area he could be gotten. However one day he was with all bulls, about 23 to 26. And another day they were mixed with the cows, 40 to 50 elephants total and we were right into the thick of them!
