I am heading to hunt with Mt Carmel next year (2015) and trying to lock in dates. Any idea when Kudus rut? Any recommendations for a first time safari hunter for plains game near Kimberly.?

They rut in May, I'd target middle of the month to catch the rut. Gemsbok, springbok, black wildebeest would be a must on my list as a first timer hunting that area.

That should about do it for species recommendations. Were you looking for a different kind of recommendation?

If I was booking I'd also stay away from the full moon. Just as well get as many things in my favor as I can. Bruce

If you have read a little of the colonial period, you might enjoy a tour of Kimberley.......I very much liked "The Big Hole" and a tour which included the mining museum. A day or two to decompress near your destination is a good way to re-regulate sleep-wake cycle, which is huge problem for some hunters..............FWB

April to the first week in June. :)

The big bulls will usually show up toward the end of April. :D

In South Africa the rutting season is through - April to May

What other animals are you looking to hunt. Try and match up your schedule.

This has been phenomenal and with all the planning, I had forgotten to take the full moon into account. My primary target is Kudu and male Gemsbuck. However, I am also looking for solid Black Wildebest, Impala and Sprinbok. I am thinking of heading over in mid May which it's closer to New moon and catch the Kudu in the rut. My Taxidermist said the Kudu have a slightly better coat and fur on their neck is better/darker during the rut-which seems cool. We (3 of us) plan to go
to Kimberly a little early to get over jet lag. Any other pointers for a first time Safari is appreciated. Reading everything I can get my hands on. Thanks

Make sure you see the "Big Hole". If you enjoy history you might want to read "The Last Empire" by Kanfer. It deals with Kimberly and the finding of diamonds, DeBeers farm, Barnato, Rhodes on through to the Oppenheimers.

Have a great hunt.

Any brand/type recommendations for 300 WIN MAG ammunition for these standard plains game animals?

Any top end expanding ammunition from the major manufactures should do a good job. I would use 180g bullets instead of the lighter weight ones. That's just my personal choice.

All the best.

In a 300 win mag, I would use ammo loaded with a 180 grains Swift A-frame or the Barnes Vor-Tx ammo with the 165 grains TTSX bullet.
Specially if I wanted the capes from Springbok, Steenbok and other small ones.
My personal choice would be the Vor-Tx ammo.

Besides the animals PHOENIX PHIL mentioned and the Kudu you want, I would also add a nice Steenbok if you get the chance and always an Impala.
I will always try to shoot at least one Impala on my hunts in Africa :)

A lot of great recommendations and advice I too recommend the Barnes Bullets with 27 African trophies on the wall using a 308, 3006, and a 300 Win Mag most of them with the 300 Win Mag I used 2 bullets 180 gr TSX and with the 308 150 gr E-Tip both outstanding bullets. Oh and don't leave out my Favorite if you get the chance for a nice Warthog by all means take it. And as James said April through first or second week of June you'll be good even though there coming out of the rut by then they'll still be following the cows just in case one didn't take. and as already stated watch that full moon that almost killed my second safari I didn't even take it into consideration won't make that mistake again.

I just got back..... I avoided the full moon, targeted the rut, etc.... Weather was good, etc. Problem with timing the rut is they are already himmed up with the female or already done & very solitude. I got mine, a very nice one.... But they are very Wiley & cautious. I'll post more later. Not stupid creatures.
