Thought on turning SxS shotgun into double rifle

I hope he joins in and gives his opinion on this project

45-90 Express might be a good option as you also can shoot 45-70 factory ammo with it.

AK thanks for the info on going 45/70 on the first one. I wasn't sure exactly what caliber would be good to start with. I have some ideas on an ejector system but not sure how easily it can be done. The school library has the book you mentioned and I plan on making a copy of it if not just buy it. I dismissed the CZ based on it is make in Hungary or Turkey and have read where people have had problems with them after 1000 rounds. I do not plan on farming out any of the labor. If anything it would be an instructor that helps and i get that for free.

Spook I may give him a call and see what he has to say about it. Is he an approachable guy?

I would not ever suggest a 375H&H on any SG frame. Way too much pressure for a conversion IMO. I'd suggest the 45-70 for North America use as a first project. Keep it in mind that it can be a money pit if you need to farm out much of the labor. Good solid shooing DR's can be gotten cheaper than building them.

Before you begin get a copy of the second edition of Ellis Brown's "Building Double Rifles on Shotgun Actions" book". It'll help guide you thru the process. For your donor action make sure that you choose one with 3 bites. The CZ is actually a better one to begin with. I'm surprised you dismissed it already.

Edit to add; Another reason to skip the 375 H&H is the lack of a rim for extraction. It'd be a royal PITA to build an extractor with tiny pawls for that belted rimless case.

Well I asked one of my instructors about the project and he was like "don't even ask me about that." he then explained it was because he saw how little of progress the other gun had. I asked my other instructor and he seemed to be more into it. He said it could be done and would be a good project. I still need to get to the library to get the book as it closes at the time my class starts.

Another book that you should have and totally understand before regulation of your project is "Shooting the British Double Rifle" by Graeme Wright.

Yes I did, when Ellis Brown came to Tech College in Pine City, MN; I enjoyed every second of it. Further, I have kept a periodic email exchange with Ellis, a great guy who works hard as he strives for perfection. Again, read Brown's book; follow what he suggests. It gives a good overview of the tried and true process that he developed. It has worked for me for conversions up through the .577 NE, using big Spanish boxlocks, 10 ga. 3.5 inch mag. actions made in the late 1960s and 1970s, ones with Greener crossbolts---they passed proof easily. Fact is, that I have measured these 10 ga. mag. actions, and found them to be almost identical size, except for depth below watertable, as .577 N.E. British double action I measured, belonging to Keith Kearcher. Regulation can, indeed, be a challenge, but it isn't all the black magic some would have you believe. Brown told me that he now can get good regulation within around 60 or so rounds; I have been able to do the same thing, certainly within 80 rounds (not in one sitting---LOL). Many American made shotgun actions are plenty robust, but lack good bolting needed. Several guys are able to do such conversions at a cost of around $4,000 to 5,000.

VD, I had to work and missed the last shoot there. But this was the first one I've ever missed, hopefully the last one missed also.

Yes, hopefully you will make the next one and all of them.
I have only made it to two DR shoots, including last week's.
Cal has, as of this spring, made sure that my info pops up when blanket emailing the usual suspects for these things.
As result, I will make it to most of them from now-on but, underline "most".
Hope to see you at the next one, if not before.
