Hunting Hawaii?

So it looks like I'm getting married in Maui next year. I want to pick up a short 2 day'ish hunt while I'm there. Anyone have any advice or recommendations?

I've always wanted to hunt in Hawaii....

It has been too darn long since I hunted Hawaii to give recommendations from a personal side.

These guys appear to understand hunting on the island. Laws, etc.
At least you can start there.

I'm hoping that someone might have a little first hand info they can pass on. I imagine hunting is not on most peoples agenda when they go to Hawaii though.

There is some great hunting on Maui and also on Lanai. If you want free range then you might want to check out Steve Gelakowski on Lanai. He has mouflon rams and axis deer hunts. He is one of the nicest guys and a great guide. You will need to be in shape for this hunt.

On Maui, check with Arrow One Outfitters. Their operation is high fence but it's large, steep in parts, and has heavy cover. They have axis deer, wild sheep, and occasional wild boar (shoot on site). Both outfits you can bow or rifle hunt. When we hunted at Arrow One my wife had some medical issues and they made sure of her comfort and she got her deer.

A little information concerning firearms and hunting license. If you want to rifle hunt borrow or rent a gun from your outfitter. You can get a gun license in Hawaii but it is time consuming and a pain in the neck. In order to get a hunting license you have to have a Hawaii hunters safety card or an exemption from the state of Hawaii. This takes a little time so you need to get it done before you go. After you have the exemption number you can buy your license online.

If you choose to hunt Lanai there is a ferry that runs from Lahina (sp) to Lanai and back several times a day. It's about 9 miles from Maui to Lanai and takes about 45 minutes or so to cross. In the winter months the whales are quite active and you will see them breaching almost nonstop. We have also had spinner dolphins following along.

Just got back from hunting Maui two weeks ago with Maui Hunting Safari's with PH Rodney Perrereira, mauihuntingsafaris.com. Awesome hunt with my wife Sarah and we able to harvest 2 trophy feral goats - tough hunt with beautiful scenery. Rodney picked us up at our hotel, Four Seasons, and dropped us off at the end of the day. Other hunts offered include: Axis and wild boar. If you are going to hunt 2 days they have lodging on site. If you need additional info please contact me - did my research and I am happy with our experience. Will definitely do it again - next time trophy Azis and boar.

John, PM returned. You can look online for the gun permit process. You have to make an appointment with the county sheriff and bring the gun in and have it registered. There may be more to it than that but I decided I didn't want to waste vacation time messing with it.
Dtarin, I have heard good things about Rodney but have not hunted with him. Where did you hunt goats?

My thoughts exactly. Don't tell my fiance but it would it would almost be a waste of time if I didn't at least sneak a day or two of hunting in while I was there.

Make it clear, she is cute enough for you to spend some time on the beach, but hunting is important to.

I've been to Maui but not hunted there yet.
It is a beautiful place and you two will have a great time there in the tropics.
I have hunted The Big Island twice and can happily recommend a Hunting Guide for that one, if you ever go there.
The point of my blathering is that Hawaii is politically pretty far left.
In my opinion, it is not worth the red tape hassle of bringing a weapon there.
Besides, burglary of any rented living space/rented automobiles is very common in Hawaii.
Most Guides will have a rifle to rent or to loan to clients.
Generally speaking, on any of the Hawaiian Islands, the hunting is quite good.
The key is to hire a proper Guide and then you will have a high success rate.

Hunted twice in Maui and went with Maui hunting safaris with dawn and Rodney. I highly recommend them as was said before they pick you up and drop you off at the end of the day. We harvested 3 feral goats and saw about 200. Axis deer were also plentiful even got to see a hog on the first hunt. One thing you must remember is if your going to do it start your application for a Hawaii hunting license letter of exemption months in advance. Most people get there and then can't go because they don't have the letter.
