Holding Bear's Paw (below)

ATT00032.jpg

These pictures are of a man who works for the US Forest Service in Alaska ,
and his trophy bear.

He was deer hunting last week when the large grizzly charged him from
about 50 yards away.
The guy emptied his 7mm Magnum semi-automatic
rifle into the bear and it dropped a few feet from him. The big bear was
still alive so the hunter reloaded and shot it several times in the head.

The bear was just over one thousand six hundred pounds. It stood
12' 6' high at the shoulder, 14' to the top of his head. It is the
largest grizzly bear ever recorded in the world.

The Alaska Fish and Wildlife Commission did not let him keep it as a trophy,
of course; but the bear will be stuffed and mounted, and placed on display at the Anchorage airport to remind tourists of the risks involved in the wild.

Analyzing contents of the bears stomach,
the Fish and Wildlife Commission established the bear had killed at least two humans in the past 72 hours,
including a hiker missing two days prior to the bear's own death.

Backtracking from where the bear had originated, the US Forest Service found the hiker's emptied 38-caliber pistol.
Not far from the pistol was the remains of the hiker.
The other body has not been found.

Although the hiker fired six shots and managed to hit the grizzly with four .38's
(that the Service ultimately retrieved, along with twelve 7mm slugs, inside the bear's body),
it only wounded the bear and probably angered it immensely.

Think about this :

If you are an average size man, you would be level with the bear's navel when he stood upright.
The bear would look you in the eye when it walked on all fours!
To give additional perspective, this bear, standing on its hind legs, could walk up to an average single story house and look over the roof;
or stand beside a two story house and look in the upper bedroom windows.

I have only seen zoo bears, one definitely underestimates their size!

That's a partial internet myth that's been floating around for 6-7 years. No human remains.
It's name is Alaska Dept of Fish and Game not a commission. There are many "embellishments" in that story.

This is a real one from a hunt I was on. No I didn't have the lucky tag the guy holding the head shot it. His brother is holding the paw. This was on Kodiak Island in 2006.

mike, this isn't the bear in the anchorage airport ?
a mate took some photos of it last year and claims its the same bruin

As previously mentioned there have been many embellishments and exaggerations to this story over the years. A shortened, but more accurate story is as follows;

The bear was shot and killed in 2001 by Ted Winnen, an airman who was stationed at Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska. Winnen's encounter with the bear took place while he and a friend were deer hunting on Hinchinbrook Island in Prince William Sound.

The bear was coming towards Winnen and his hunting partner from about 10 yards away, but they are unsure whether it was "charging them." According to the two hunters, the bear may not even have been aware of their presence.

The bear measured 10 feet, 6 inches from nose to tail and its weight was estimated at between 1,000 to 1,200 pounds. Although it was a large bear for the Prince William Sound area, it was not a world record.

Winnen killed the bear with a .338 Win Mag. The bear was not known to have killed any humans.

I don't think it's the same one Bluey, That stuffed one has been there for many years. If it's the one I'm thinking of it's now in a closed, secure area so I can't pop in to have a look at the plaque. Besides there are several mounts of bears in both terminals and they're all big.
That one I've shown is just a bit under 10'6" squared out. But it was hard to measure because we had to cut the hide thru the waist line to pack it out. I think it was bigger than Ak F&G measured it.

Big 5's version of that story rings a bell as being correct. But I thought it was down near Sitka area.

when his daughter comes over this week end ,he'll get her to email them to me .and l;ll try and post em .

Here's a photo of Winnen with the bear that is different from those originally posted. The depth of field in this photo is not as great and gives a much better perspective as to the actual size of the bear. Still a big bear, but nowhere near as huge as the above photos make it appear.

These bears are amazing. I have felt privileged to hunt grizzlies (as a guide) in Montana for a few years in the late 60s and hunt them as a client a few years ago. For those who either have hunted them or dream of it, the book "Last of the Great Brown Bear Men" is a must read.

One of the bears in the photo section, a monster, but not the biggest.

Worked with Ted, and the other gent is Jimmy Urban, who is now a Captain in the USAF. Bear was indeed shot on Hinchinbrook Island, it squared 10' 6" and is in the top 100 for brown bears. It was a fly in blacktail hunt, but both of them were carrying bear tags as well. Jimmy is a very accomplished hunter, Ted is a lucky son of a gun.

Hello,

I've lived in Anchorage 32 years and hunted / fished quite a bit off the road (fly in / boat in) but do not recall this bear story.
(Needless to say, my memory is not too swift these days).
However, I do remember a deer hunter getting bagged by a grizzly or "brown bear" (as the Alaskan nick-name goes), on Hinchenbrook Island about that time.
He ended up shot by some one, I think it may have been a Game Warden / State Trooper (not sure any more) but I do not recall it being a world record, etc.

The AK Tourism Industry probably does not want potential tourists to know that we have somewhere between 1 and 3 people mauled by bears each year (Hawaii averages about the same each year in shark attacks as well).
However, we lose way more tourists than that to car crashes, small plane crashes, falling off cliffs and hypothermia as well.

Not sure where I'm going with this so, I think I will clam up.
Velo Dog.

I visited Bella Coola in British Columbia two years ago and saw some decent sized Grizzlies but I can't imagine how impressive it must be to see a monster like that standing on its hind legs!! While I was there, I grabbed a cool book about bear hunting stories titled Grizzlies & White Guys: The Stories of Clayton Mack

Clayton Mack (1910-1993) was a local indian guide famous for getting a client on the second largest B&C grizzly at the time in Kwatna in 1954. Very good read.

I cannot read "Bella Coola" without thinking "Crusoe of Lonesome Lake"!
