i want to try some larger bores

if you follow my other threads you will have a better understanding. i wont explain everything here but i will answer a few questions.

1. yes, i bought a 450/400 3" NE double rifle. it was a great deal more then $1k but i went ahead and pulled money from a savings acount. (glad im not married or the wife would kill me)

2. im hunting cape buffalo and last i checked anything in the .400-.480 is very suitable for this task.

3. im not looking for a bigger bore at the moment but im always dreaming about new guns. i would love to try some other big bores but to date i still have the biggest guns of any person i know short of a 50 BMG.

as a piece of social advice, for your first post on a forum you might try not taking a jab at one of the current members.

OK, thanks for the explanation, Matt. I was only going off the information within this one thread, I wasn't aware of the others you mention.
Now I feel the onus for explaining is on me. To start, as I mentioned in my post, I was not trying to bust your chops, or "take a jab" at you. I was merely trying to understand what you were asking given what was mentioned in that thread alone.
To finish, although I found this website only a few months ago this is not my first post on this particular forum.
It is very easy to misinterpret things written in the vernacular of the electronic medium. I witnessed it continually during my 25+ years in the corporate world and now witness it in the private sector. I try to be aware of this whenever I try to gather information within the short space of a thread.
If you go back and simply read what I wrote without adding the assumption of a conflicting attitude I think you'll see that I was merely trying to understand your query given the information from that thread alone. I also purposely mentioned that I was NOT jabbing at you or busting your chops in ANY way. I also mentioned that I perfectly understood your desire to not get into calibres bigger than what you stated, the implication being that I felt similarly regarding heavy recoiling firearms.
On closing I will merely reiterate that I was not writing my post to punch you around electronically, but rather was only trying to understand your angle from what you said in that thread alone.

Hello matt85,

Your choice of the .450/400 3" is an excellent one.
Three of my closest friends have them here where I live.
One is a Harrison & Hussey (1920's?) SxS, claw mounted with Swaovski low powered scope.
One is a custom made SxS on a Pre-War JP Sauer shotgun action (triple bite, very strong).
One is a Ruger #1 single shot, with 4x Zeiss scope.
IMO, that is one of if not the best double rifle cartridges a hunter could hope for.

Personally I do not think you need any larger cartridge, unless you think you might actually be charged by multiple furious elephants simultaneously, while your PH is sleeping under some far-off shade tree.
(Not gonna happen.)
No PH I know would ever let you down in such a bind / most carry a .458 of one type or another and can shoot it as straight as Annie Oakley could shoot a .22.

Besides, even if all that were to come together for you in an unfortunate perfect storm, with the caliber you have, providing you have it stoked with the proper bullets for the job and most important of all, you put them in the right spot, you can find solace in knowing that two of the beasts will fall before you have to reload.

Practice, practice, practice and then practice some more.
