Best places to see and maybe hunt bears?

There's a five-county area in northeastern North Carolina that probably has the highest concentration of black bears in the world, as well as some of the largest. It's an area of maybe 3,200 square miles, much of it swamps, lakes, thick scrub, and farmland. Not unusual to see 10-20...

    Antivenom?

I don't think it's anything to worry about excessively. Snakes are there, but bites on hunting trips are apparently pretty rare. On my last trip to Zimbabwe, the PH mostly wore Crocs. We saw a couple of mambas (one dead, one alive) and a puff adder, but nobody seemed very concerned...

    Swift A Frame Results

A-Frames are great. I used them in 375 on buffalo and plains game on two safaris. I zeroed the rifle with 300 grain bullets and never changed. A few years ago, when my 270 was in the shop, I took a couple of Virginia whitetails with the same load. Obviously, they worked, and the 300 grain...

    1903 Mannlicher Schoenauer 6.5x54, Questions

Ernest Hemingway wrote about using that rifle and cartridge in Africa. Pretty interesting endorsement. As someone remarked, the tremendous ballistic coefficient of the 160 grain round nose must have made up for what it seems to lack when you look at the ballistic tables.

ZAMBIA: 2018 Luangwa To Livingstone With Strang Middleton

This sounds very do-able to me. I live on the S.E. coast of NC, but my pickup truck and I can certainly reach Greensboro, or wherever.

In memoriam - RIP Barry Style

I had the great privilege of hunting with Barry in the Kazuma area in 2015. He was a great PH, a fine conservationist, a wonderful host, and a very fine man. What a loss to us all!

If you could only have 3 guns....

12 gauge Remington 870 with two barrels--one 28" w/ choke tubes, the other 20" rifled slug bbl w/ iron sights. OK for hunting birds, small game, most larger game at short range, home defense. Easily available ammo everywhere. Ruger 10/22 for general chores. Like the 870, dependable and nearly...

    375 H&H Accuracy

Winchester M70 with synthetic stock. Mine shoots 270 grain and 300 grain pretty well, but for hunting I've used exclusively Swift A-Frames and Hornady solids, both in 300 grain. These do a bit over an inch for a 3-shot group at 100 yards. The A-Frames are great. Good penetration and weight...

Defence Force Accused Of 'Massive Cover-up' Over Anti-malarial Drug

My wife had some unpleasant reactions to larium on our first trip to Africa in 2004. (Some hallucinations, vivid dreams; she knew she was hallucinating and was calm about it, but of course she immediately stopped taking the drug, and so did I. We had been warned of "possible side effects.")...

Help Me Choose a 1911 Pistol

Colt, Ruger, Springfield, S&W, Remington, Kimber--all these are great 1911s right out of the box. And they all can be endlessly customized. (Well, "endlessly" up to your budget's limit.) I've owned most and used them all. Surprisingly, I've found the Remington R1 one of the easiest and most...
