One reason to use a red dot scope is to allow both eyes open when acquiring your target.
I have found I can leave both eyes open when using my scope on the 1.5x setting, which gets me on target a bit quicker.
Maybe a less cumbersome option would be to install QD rings on a small scope (1.5~4x)...
Something else to consider;
A large scope requires stronger mounts to overcome its inertia. Under recoil, inertia tries to keep the scope in its original position. This is why the scope creeps forward after every shot, if the rings aren't up to the task.

I usually use a sling, when hunting. The problem with carrying with muzzle up and slung over the shoulder, is that when you rotate the rifle into a shooting position, it is easy to point the muzzle at the person behind you during rotation.
