Sir Samuel Baker wrote an entire book about hunting in Ceylon in the 1840s, which included running amongst herds of elephant and shooting them from powder burn range. That was back when elephants were not really hunted, had no fear of humans, and were abundant. Some of his descriptions are pretty tough to stomach. The critters were just left to rot. Hard to say if he even extracted the ivory, which on the Indian elephants is not substantial.
