165gr Barnes TSX in 300wm worked fine for us. All one shot kills, no tracking needed. Placement is key.
This one was recovered from a large gemsbok on a quartering shot.
I used the TSX last year in Africa. I love them. Used both 300WM and 375H&H. 8 of 10 animals 1 shot. Bad the Kudo and Wilderbeest took multiple shots and you are correct it is all about shot placement.
